As a child in Brazil, I was fascinated with learning about renewable energies. Brazil is considered to be an industry leader in sustainable biofuel production, and is the second largest producer of ethanol fuel in the world. Wanting to pay homage to where I came from, I chose to focus on biofuels after I finished my studies in economics. It was the best decision of my life.

With a big dose of luck, I was able to begin a traineeship at the European Commission because I applied right when they were pushing for more renewable energy in the European Union. I was looking into how new requirements for sustainable biofuel markets were applied. While I loved this work I wanted to work in a more global environment. This was when I found out that the United Nations had units dealing with renewable energy and development. It seemed to me an obvious choice to apply.

As an Economic Affairs Officer for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, my priority is to help countries identify more sustainable methods of engaging in international trade. I work in a research team that publishes advisory studies for countries seeking support for the development of domestic and regional bioenergy strategies.

The main goal of UNCTAD is to help poorer countries gain access to and increase their participation in international trade so that trade becomes an engine of development. We also promote responsible wildlife trade, such as in snake skins, and make sure these species are not being overexploited.

Occasionally, I volunteer as a speaker for university students who would like to learn more about the Organization; this I truly enjoy. My advice is to focus on what one does well and what one enjoys; be proactive and be a creative thinker. It is important to take advantage of the specific expertise one brings from their home country and apply it to one’s work. No one has the same experience or voice and all of that input is crucial to solving global issues.

The passion and the vast knowledge base within the organization stems from the representation of different nationalities and diverse background of those who work here. The United Nations is very different from other organizations because of this diversity. There is no space for prejudice. It is also refreshing to be surrounded by people who are proud of the work that they do.

I have always admired the blue flag, and it is incredible to be a part of an organization that has inspired a generation of people. Much of that feeling of pride comes from interacting with the public, especially when you go on missions. You can see that people really believe in and admire the United Nations, and that its actions can bring improvement. I never thought that my interest in the energy sources of my home country could allow me to assist other countries in refining their own energy strategies, but I am proud that it does.
