When to arrive for the YPP exam in New York HQ? In Active
Posted: Friday, 11 December 2015
  Category: YPP
Question: I am invited to sit the YPP exam in New York HQ. The instructions on the UN YPP website state that examinees may need to factor in extra time for finding the exam location in the building. Current instructions inform me to go to the main entrance. The registration starts at 5:30 am. Will UN YPP post more detailed information about the directions to the exam room in the building before the exam or would you advise me to arrive at the building at 5:00 am. on the 15th of December and find my directions at the main entrance on that day?

Answer: We advise that candidates arrive between 5:30 am and 6:30 am at the UN building to allow sufficient time for verification of identity, sign-in and transfer to multiple examination rooms. All candidates, externals as well as staff members, will have to go through UN security, after that through YPP registration, and you will then be brought to your assigned room by someone from the YPP team. As a large number of candidates will take the exam in New York, there might be lines. This is why we ask you to arrive in time. The gates of the building will not open before 5:30 am, and this is when registration for the YPP examination in New York starts. After passing the UN security, all candidates (externals AND staff) have to register with the YPP team in the GA Lobby before entering examination rooms. Registration is scheduled to close at 7:30 am. Once registration is closed, late arrivals will not be admitted to the examination. The examination itself is scheduled to start at 7:30 am.

5 TIPS TO PREPARE FOR THE GENERAL PAPER In Active
Posted: Thursday, 22 October 2015
  Category: YPP
These tips are based on previous experience of the UN Examinations and Tests Section. Most common mistakes and candidates' feedback were taken into consideration in writing these tips.

1. Know the fundamentals
Thoroughly read everything written on the careers.un.org/ypp web page about the general paper. Get familiar with the sample general paper and the sample answer booklet which are both posted there. Main points to remember: the text of the general paper is around 900 words (French version might have more words due to language difference), text is not paragraphed and you are expected to write a summary of around 300 words by hand in 45 minutes. Not respecting the instructions and writing outside the lines allocated for answering the general paper will disqualify your answer. Note: There are no multiple choice questions in this part of the exam!

2. Grammar rules

The general paper tests your summarizing skills as well as your grasp of English or French. As you will have to paraphrase the text make sure that you get your language skills up to date. Read internationally recognized newspapers on a daily basis, get familiar with the language of texts published on UN websites and work on your weak areas by writing out the phrases you are not familiar with.

3. Practice
Print out the pages of the answer booklet, which are dedicated to the general paper. Find different articles on the internet and remove all titles and paragraphs. Practice summary writing by hand on the answer booklet pages which you printed. Use a watch to see how long it takes you and don’t use any correction fluid or erasers (you won’t be able to use them at the exam either). If you make a mistake, cross it out and write anew, exactly as you would do during the exam. Practice writing legibly – it is important that markers can read your hand writing!

4. Ask yourself what the article is about
Each article has a single main message and each paragraph tells a story supporting that message. Read the article, lean back and ask yourself what it is about. Scribble main messages on your drafting paper. Those main messages will form the core of your summary. Make sure your summary includes all the main messages from the original article. Candidates will be given drafting paper at the exam. You must use a ballpoint pen in dark blue or black, otherwise the scanner that scans your paper before it goes to the markers will not be able to read it.

5. Proofread the text

Make sure to proofread your text as language is one of the evaluation categories. Correct grammar and style where necessary. Compare main messages of your summary with the original text. Also, practice how many words per line you write. That way you will be able to plan the structure of your summary and manage your time better. A good trick is to count all the words in the first three lines, take the average and multiply with the number of lines. The result will be a good approximation of what 300 words mean with your handwriting. No extra points will be given for summaries longer than 300 words.
5 TIPS TO PREPARE FOR THE SPECIALIZED PAPER In Active
Posted: Thursday, 22 October 2015
  Category: YPP
These tips are based on previous experience of the UN Examinations and Tests Section. Most common mistakes and candidates' feedback were taken into consideration in writing these tips.

1. Know the fundamentals
Go back to the job opening you have applied to. That document reveals what kind of candidates the UN is searching for. Pay special attention to “Responsibilities and Competencies” since some of these will be tested in the exam. For example, if the competency requires “knowledge of budget development”, then that gives you an idea that this might be tested. The same goes for other competencies and responsibilities. Ask yourself what knowledge and skills do you still miss to be the ideal candidate and work on those.

2. Take the reading list seriously

Carefully go through the suggested reading list. You can find it under “Examinations Structure” at careers.un.org/ypp. It will give you a good idea of the knowledge, which will be tested. Make a list of the major areas that the reading list refers to. They will guide you in your learning activities. Couple them with research of UN internet pages. Check what is currently especially important for the UN and get the general understanding of how the current UN reality connects to your area of expertise (job family).

3. Thoroughly understand the structure of the answer booklet
Get familiar with the answer booklet. Have a look at how to fill in answers to multiple choice questions. You must use a pencil for the answer page for the multiple choice questions, otherwise the scanner which prepares the exams for the markers will not be able to read that part! Then, have a look at the constructed response items section where you must use a black or a dark blue ball point pen, again because of the scanner. Note that questions 1 to 3 have four pages for your answer and questions 4 to13 only two pages. You will not be allowed to write more or on different pages of the answer booklet. Print out the pages and write mock answers. Not respecting the instructions and writing outside the pages allocated for answering a particular question will disqualify your answer. For example, pages 21 and 22 are intended for answer 5 to question 5. If you use page 23 to write your answer, that answer won’t be processed by the scanning software.

4. Prepare summaries of main topics
Make your own notes from the material you read. Write short speaking points or mind charts on each of the major topics for your field of expertise (job family). Take a few hours every day for learning and make a compendium of most important topics.

5. Take your time to prepare
Start preparing well before the exam and don’t underestimate the time you have left. Make sure you understand what you read about and are able to explain your reasoning well. Just knowing the facts is not enough.

Dear Candidate,

Firstly, thank you for writing the YPP examination in Photography. We have received some questions regarding the exam and would like to answer them here. The whole exam, including the portfolio, will be marked anonymously by the Examination Board consisting of experienced UN staff working in the area of photography. YPP EXAMINATION In Active

  Dear Candidates,

As the Young Professional Programme examination is an important exam involving many stakeholders across different countries and time zones it is important to share with you what you can expect at your exam location in terms of procedures.

Every location will have at least one Exam Administrator who will represent the United Nations. The person will take care of the conduct of the exam but will not be able to answer any substance related questions at any time. The Exam Administrator will be able to deny entry to a candidate who cannot produce proof of his identity and/or his nationality. If you didn’t receive a convocation letter you should still come to the exam and find your name on the Signatures list.

At arrival at the exam location you will be asked to sign the Signatures list, remove your bags and put telephones and other communication devices in paper envelopes, which will be sealed and given back to you.

The exam will begin with opening of sealed envelopes containing exams. A candidate sitting the exam, normally the first person on the Signatures list, will witness the opening. Afterwards, the Exam Administrator will proceed with formal reading of instructions for all candidates. After the official start of the exam candidates won’t be allowed to enter the room. Anyone wanting to leave early will have to leave the room before the beginning of the exam.

Candidates will be given 4h 30min to write the exam. You are responsible to manage your own time and can answer any part of the exam at any time. Suggested times for each question are written next to each question.

You can bring light snacks and water to the exam but please no crunchy food, which would disturb others. Food rules might be stricter depending on specifics of each location. You may not use a calculator during the exam. Should you wish to leave the room you will be accompanied by staff at your location. Candidates caught cheating will be officially reported to the Headquarters.

After the end of examination all question booklets will be collected and counted. Only after all exam material will be accounted for will candidates be allowed to leave. Sealing of the material will again have to be witnessed by the same candidate who witnessed opening of the exam material.

Please help us to make this important exam a good experience for all candidates. Read other notifications on this portal and prepare well.

  Dear candidates,

* We have sent out all letters for the YPP examination 2013 (by email).

* The exam centres are not yet published online but you will find them there soon.

* Please note: There is  NO International Affairs part this year! The multiple choice questions will be part of the Specialized Paper and relate to the substance matter.

Dear candidates,

We would like to inform you that the software dealing with your applications has had some hick-ups. For this reason, the sending out of letters which inform you whether you will be convoked to the written part of the 2013 YPP examination will be delayed by a week, until 22 October. We thank you for your patience!

Your YPP team

Dear applicants,

The deadlines for applications are now closed and we are in the process of screening applications. As you might know, only the top 40 applicants of each participating country in each job family can be admitted to take the exam. We are doing our utmost to finalise this process until the end of September. During the first half of October, you should therefore receive an email from "YPP2013@un.org" with a PDF attachment that will reveal to you whether you will have the chance to sit for the exam. This PDF attachment will be the so-called "CONVOCATION LETTER", and it will include your personal "APPLICATION NUMBER". Please keep this number for future reference!

Please check the spam folders of all your email accounts if you have not received an email until mid-October. Please refer back to us by email YPP2013@un.org AFTER that date if you did not receive an email.

Meanwhile, the YPP team thanks all of you for your patience and interest!
