The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants (MIKE) Programme was established by the CITES Conference of the Parties to monitor levels of illegal killing of elephants in sample sits in elephant range States in Africa and Asia, with the goal of providing reliable information, and building capacity for the management of elephant populations. In recent years, the Programme's geographical coverage expanded considerably and now includes 98 MIKE sites spread over 45 elephant range States. The MIKE Programme now also focuses on minimizing the illegal killing of elephants and other endangered species and has become more global. The MIKE Central Coordination Unit is primarily responsible for the implementation of the MIKE Programme.
The MIKE Programme Management Officer is responsible for the overall management of the CITES MIKE Programme activities, including implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the programme and its associated projects, as well as for all technical outputs of the programme, and its financial and operational sustainability.
The position is located at the Nairobi duty station.
