Where we are

New York, United States

Located in midtown Manhattan in New York, on the banks of the East River, the United Nations Headquarters is the physical embodiment of a noble idea for a better world that began with the formation of the Organization in 1945. Here, representatives of the world's 6.7 billion people, gather to discuss and decide issues that revolve around the three major pillars of the United Nations Charter - peace, human rights and development. As it works tirelessly to find tangible solutions to its principal tenets and their related and interconnected issues, the United Nations Secretariat in New York employs over 5,000 men and women from around the world.

New York Headquarters hosts the seats of the majority of four main intergovernmental bodies of the United Nations. These include the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and the Trusteeship Council in addition to the Secretariat.

Several meetings are held daily at the United Nations Headquarters as the Organization endeavours to guide its 192 Member States towards consensus on a wide range of issues, including peace, security and sustainable development, as well as to implement internationally agreed resolutions, decisions and goals.

The daily work of the United Nations, carried out in six official languages, portrays both the multilingual nature of the Headquarters experience and the rich selection of language related jobs, as well as the support positions that are vital to the ongoing deliberations of the Organization’s main intergovernmental bodies. So, whether your interest is in humanitarian, political or social affairs, peacekeeping, economics, media and communication, security or information and communication technology, the United Nations Headquarters offers career opportunities to both experienced professionals and graduate students interested in an internship.

Staff from around the world work in the United Nations landmark complex in New York which is now in the process of the most ambitious renovation in its over 60 years history. This involves a $1.9 billion overhaul in the next five years, and in the interim, relocation of staff to different buildings in the city, primarily in the midtown area of Manhattan.

New York City is also host to the headquarters of several United Nations Agencies, Funds and Programmes, including the United Nations Children’s Fund, the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Population Fund – all located on nearby streets from the Secretariat on 1st Avenue.

New York has the largest diplomatic and consular community in the world with 192 Permanent Missions to the United Nations in addition to 110 Consulates. Given the 24-hour seven days a week nature of New York city, the Headquarters experience is not only limited to vast international job opportunities, spanning many fields, but also comes with a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic multicultural city that has a large international and business community, and offers access to museums, fashion, restaurants, Broadway shows and many other diverse forms of other entertainment.
