I have always been a part of the United Nations family, not only as an employee of over 30 years, but also as the daughter of a United Nations staff member. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a part of the United Nations, especially the Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean. I am proud of my contributions to the Organization because I get to assist the offices and the staff members every day. I feel like am working for the entire world itself; it is surreal, and yet humbling. Each workday as a Human Resources Assistant, I feel like I am helping those who help the world.

My days as a Human Resources Assistant are hectic. I start the morning by addressing the needs and issues of staff members; they often approach me with queries about specifics rules and regulations of the office or questions about various administrative requirements. I am always happy to help them because that is what one does in a “family”, and that is what the Organization is – “One United Nations family.”

The United Nations family employs people from the far reaches of the Earth; each individual joins this Organization bringing along his or her own unique experiences, as well as different techniques for solving problems. These experiences do not just help to shape the Organization; they help to shape you as an individual. A different way of thinking helps you shape your own way of thinking. As I interact with each and every employee here at my ECLAC office in Santiago, I wonder how my experiences are going to help shape them.

My experiences with this office in human resources are rich; I understand this system very well and I manage my time accordingly to ensure I am available to provide assistance wherever it may be required. Whether I am helping to in-process a new employee, or assisting staff members move to new positions, I am always in the mix. I love to feel like a part of the “team”.

Although we work hard here at ECLAC, we also take opportunities to interact with one another outside of the workplace. We share stories, socialize, and participate in various other activities. I sing in ECLAC’s choir and also run. Actually, I have formed a running group and together, we have participated in a number of national and international marathons. Our next stop is New York City.
