I started working for the United Nations in 1986 as an intern in the Department of Public Information in New York. Two years later, I got a full-time position. Altogether I have spent 25 years both within and outside the United Nations in the communication and media world working in print, radio, video and new media productions as well as in outreach and media relations. During this time, I worked in South West Africa, which later became Namibia, as well as in Haiti, Cambodia, Somalia, Burundi, DR Congo and the former East Timor, where I am currently based and is now Timor-Leste.

The United Nations gives me a unique opportunity to serve around the world and invent new ways of communicating. Personally, I find my line of work to be optimal because I have the opportunity to provide correct and timely information. I always wanted to work in an international environment and contribute to world peace by providing information and communication as well as civic education services to those who are most in need. Being an international civil servant I like to think of myself as a servant of the world.

One of my most gratifying experiences was being part of the peacekeeping mission that supported Namibia’s move towards independence. On the day of the elections, I covered the events as a video producer and it was amazing to watch people from so many different tribes lining up at the polling stations to vote for the first time. It is still a moving memory. Prior to that election, I provided civic education on the population’s right to vote. I also witnessed this amazing moment of people voting for the time while working in both Cambodia and Haiti.

There is no typical day in my professional life, which is part of what makes it so wonderful. Today, for example, I am giving a video training to two Timorese women who are following this training at their own initiative. One has four children and works voluntarily in the community radio station. Most of the time, I coordinate the work of the multimedia team, design and implement information campaigns and products, which include video, radio, web, and print.

When working for the United Nations, you have to be ready for a life full of challenges and adventures. We are working in a multicultural environment so understanding each other is not always easy. I have learned that you overcome barriers by listening and maintaining your overall objective of serving the world. You have to be flexible and adaptable and be ready for the best and the worst of human nature. But most of all, you have to always keep true to your heart and your ideals. The United Nations is a reflection of the world; it is not better, it is not worse.

The unique part of being in Dili, the capital of Timor Leste, is that unlike many other peacekeeping missions, the security situation is relatively stable, giving us the opportunity to concentrate on helping to re-build the country, the capacity of the people and working towards sustainable development. On a personal note, I am able to live in a bamboo house on the beach without worrying too much about security. I typically work long hours but after work I go out with my friends from Timor and all over the world. If it is not too late, I also go for walks and eat on the beach. I love martial arts, swimming, reading, theater, watching movies and meditating.
