Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is located in the New York Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The intern will work with the Agenda for Humanity Team in the Information Management Branch and the Policy Branch specifically. The incumbent will report to a Humanitarian Affairs Officer.

Administrative requirements:

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Candidates must be medically insured; able to obtain necessary visas and arrange travel to UNHQ, as well as cover the cost of travel, accommodation and living expenditure for the duration of the internship. Responsibilities

Humanitarian Affairs interns conduct a variety of tasks, including:
•In consultation with a senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer, assists in the design and preparation of studies on humanitarian, disaster, emergency relief and related issues and in various follow-up activities.
•Researches, analyses and presents information gathered from diverse sources on assigned topics/issues.
•Contributes to the preparation of various written documents, e.g. drafts sections of studies, background papers, policy guidelines, parliamentary documents etc.
•Assists in the organization of meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops, etc. with other agencies and partners to facilitate exchanges of professional expertise and views on specific humanitarian-related subjects/issues; prepares briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events; serves as reporter to such events.
•Maintains awareness of current humanitarian affairs and related issues, to include relevant political, policy, gender considerations or other developments in specific subject area, country or region concerned.
•Engages in UN intergovernmental process and with Member States on humanitarian affairs.
•Reviews and provides advice on specific topics or policy-related issues in one or more of the following: international humanitarian law, forced displacement, the humanitarian-development nexus and humanitarian financing.
•Conducts in-depth research topics using a variety of sources as well as quantitative analysis. Is familiar with basic statistical methods and able to translate basic statistical analysis into messaging for advocacy.
•Assists in outreach and coordination with a wider set of partners, including the private sector, foundations, academics, and think-tanks.
•Responds to a variety of inquiries and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.
•Be guided by the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations
•Perform other duties as required.

Specifically for this internship, the incumbent will support preparations of the Agenda for Humanity annual report and upcoming reporting cycle. Duties will include running database queries to analyse stakeholder responses; supporting development work on the Platform for Action, Commitments and Transformations (PACT – www.agendaforhumanity.org); crafting of new visualizations of stakeholder data, among other duties. The incumbent will also support the Agenda for Humanity’s report launch, in conjunction with preparations for the Global Humanitarian Policy Forum (December 2018).

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
•Be computer literate in standard software applications;
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme; however any practical and academic experience on humanitarian issues including humanitarian financing mechanisms, humanitarian funding trends, gender equality programming is desirable. Research interest and published work on these or/and any related areas is desirable.

Experience (academic and/or practical) with managing a relational database such as MS-SQL, creating queries and stored procedures is required. Experience with visualisation software like Tableau and D3 programming is desirable. Experience with machine learning, python, R is desirable. Experience supporting event management is an advantage.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Official language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

The internship within the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, in line with the United Nations (UN) Internship Programme, aims to provide a framework by which students from diverse academic backgrounds gain exposure to the United Nations through assignment to offices within the Secretariat in order to enhance their educational experience and gain experience in the work of the United Nations. Additionally, it provides the United Nations offices with the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours). The general working hours at United Nations Headquarters New York are 40 hours per week, from 9:00 to 5:00 pm with one hour for a lunch break. The intern should adhere to the established official weekly working hours of respective duty station if the internship is based in a field-office location. All costs associated to the internship are to be borne by the intern, specifically: travel, visas, accommodation/ living expenses and medical insurance for the entire duration of the internship.
