Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme, also referred to as UN Environment, is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Under the Policy and Programme Division, the Crisis Management Branch (CMB) works to reduce environmental causes and consequences of disasters and conflicts and promotes environmental security and resilience to reduce disaster and conflict risks.

UNEP’s Crisis Management Branch extends UNEP's work in areas of the world where the natural and human environment have been damaged from conflicts or disasters. Specialized environmental expertise is provided to rapidly identify risks to health, livelihoods and ecosystem services and to integrate environmental needs within the recovery process. UNEP/ Crisis Management Branch promotes sustainable management of natural resources in conflict and disaster affected countries and demonstrates to decision makers the importance of natural resources management as a precondition for sustainable development and as an instrument for peace building and disaster risk reduction. Since 1999, the team has conducted field operations in over 40 countries and works in close cooperation with the humanitarian, development and peace building frameworks of the UN system.

One or more consultants are needed to edit, copy-edit or proof-read a number of products related to UNEP/Crisis Management Branch’s work. Crisis Management Branch will keep a roster of candidates willing to accept temporary contracts ranging from part-time to full-time depending on the assignment and organizational need. Selected candidates and subsequent contract duration and remuneration will depend on the specific terms of reference established for each assignment.

Selected candidates will undertake the copy-editing or proof-reading of reports, documentation or other, as required.

1. Copy-edit reports and other publications (including grammar consistency, spelling and usage)
2. Ensure that the style and tone of the narrative text is harmonized and accessible to non-expert readers.
3. Work with the designated supervisor in changing content or text of the relevant report, where necessary
4. Submit edited report, where necessary

Qualifications/special skills

Competency: • Proven written communication skills.
• Basic understanding of the international context and the work of Crisis Management
Branch.
• Ability to deliver timely and high-quality results under and within tight deadlines
• Excellent coordination skills, with an ability to follow instruction and work under
pressure.
• Very high level of attention to detail
• Full computer literacy
• Strong organizational ability
• Ability to work independently from home
Academic Qualifications: University degree in communications, journalism, environmental sciences, history, or other relevant degree.
Advanced degree in relevant subject would be an asset
Experience: At least 3 years of relevant work experience in communications, editing or related field.
Language: Mother-tongue English speaker, or equivalent
Other language skills are seen as an asset
