Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the French Translation and Text Processing Section (FTTS) of the Conference Management Service (CMS), Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The incumbent will be working under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Section.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

•Translate, mostly without revision, texts submitted mainly by UNODC, UNOV, CTBTO and UNIDO;
•Revise texts covering subjects dealt with by the above-mentioned bodies and organizations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency in legal matters.
•Meet the established workload and quality standards;
•Develop new terminology for use where none exists in the target language; carry out linguistic research and participate in the preparation of online terminology records and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference tools;
•Coach and assist junior translators, give them feedback on their work and brief them on the procedures and practices of the Section, terminology and a number of subjects, as required;
•Participate in drafting or consistency groups;
•Supervise the work of small groups of translators during meetings;
•Contribute to the quality management of outsourced documents;
•Perform other work related duties as required.

Education

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors in French or any United Nations language competitive examination in French held before 2017.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading, production editing or in another relevant language field, and using relevant computer software, electronic tools and databases is required. Experience in the use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tool is required. Three years of experience working within a multilingual setting is desirable.

Legal studies and/or experience with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations will be considered an asset.

Languages

Fluency in French, which must be the candidate’s main language.

French translators must also have knowledge of English and, preferably, of one other official United Nations language, as tested by the relevant United Nations language competitive examination.

The requirement of a third language may be waived in the case of candidates who possess relevant substantive expertise in the legal field.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

This job opening is advertised to fill a temporarily vacant position during the absence of the regular incumbent for a period of one year or longer. The regular incumbent is entitled to return to this position at the expiry of the temporary vacancy period. If the regular incumbent exercises the right to return, the appointment or temporary assignment or promotion of the candidate selected for this job opening will not be renewed or extended.

• This position is temporarily available from 1st February 2019 until 31 January 2020 (with possibility of extension). If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• While this temporary job opening may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

• Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

• This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.

• Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply. • Retirees above the mandatory age of separation who wish to be considered for the current temporary job opening must indicate the reason for their last separation as "retirement."
