UNEP FI requires a Communications Coordinator & Campaign Manager to manage the communication campaigns related to banking initiatives, mainly the Principles for Responsible Banking. This should be done in close collaboration with the UNEP FI Communications Officer. The consultant will develop and execute a communications plan for the Principles for Responsible Banking and for UNEP FI’s banking work more broadly.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a strategic partnership between UN Environment and approximately 230 banks, insurers and investors to develop and promote sustainable finance. Through its work-streams and regional activities, comprehensive work programme, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to promote the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practices across financial institutions.

UNEP FI’s Banking Team is responsible for the initiative’s work with its 130 member banks from around the world. Jointly with its member banks UNEP FI works towards aligning the banking industry with society’s goals, as expressed in the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.

UNEP FI is looking for a Communications Coordinator & Campaign Manager for the Banking Programme. Specifically, the consultant would be responsible for managing and coordinating the campaign around the Principles for Responsible Banking, communication towards UNEP FI member banks and communication towards external stakeholders and the wider banking industry.

Objectives, output expectations and performance indicators:

With regards to the Principles for Responsible Banking:

Until May 2019 the Principles for Responsible Banking are out for global public consultation. The aim of this phase is to engage the wider banking industry and stakeholders, obtain feedback and further build the coalition of banks and stakeholders supporting the Principles. For this phase, the consultant will be required to further detail and translate into practice the existing communication strategy. The consultant would be required to implement and coordinate a campaign with the 28 founding banks of the Principles based on the existing communication strategy, including outreach versus various channels such as social media, media, emails, blogs, webpage, etc.

In September 2019 the final Principles for Responsible Banking will be signed by bank CEOs in New York. In the context of this milestone, the consultant will be required to develop and in collaboration with the signing banks implement a communications and media campaign.

After September 2019 the number of signatory banks and supportive stakeholders will need to grow further and the Principles for Responsible Banking will need to be established as the market standard for sustainable banking. The consultant will be required to develop and implement a communications strategy for this.

With regards to communication towards UNEP FI member banks, stakeholders and the wider banking industry:

UNEP FI’s communication with its member banks so far is not sufficiently, systematic, strategic and targeted. The consultant will be required to develop and execute a strategy for more effective communications and engagement with the UNEP FI member banks.

The consultant will be required to develop and execute a strategy for more effective communications towards relevant stakeholders and the wider banking industry.

Specific tasks and responsibilities:

The consultant will be required to perform the following tasks:

With regards to the Principles for Responsible Banking:
• Develop, under the guidance of UNEP FI and executes strategies and plans for communications and campaigns for the global public consultation phase, the signing of the Principles and the further coalition building afterwards.
• Coordinate joint campaigns under the guidance of UNEP FI to ensure consistent messaging, collate feedback from banks on their successful campaigns, make recommendations and assist banks with their campaigns.
• Update UNEP FI’s Principles for Responsible Banking hub which is the repository for all communications materials and update the communications materials themselves
• Write, edit and manage content for the UNEP FI website, emails, presentations, public relations and social media.
• Communicate, under the guidance and direction of UNEP FI, about the Principles for Responsible Banking and other UNEP FI Banking activities on UNEP FI social media – Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Youtube.
• Draft press releases, liaise with financial media to arrange interviews, articles and other communication about UNEP FI Banking activities
• Lead a UN internal awareness campaign and work with UN Environment – writing copy for UN Environment website, intranet, social media and liaising with other UN secretariat, communications channels.

With regards to broader communication around UNEP FI’s Banking Work:
• Develop a more systematic, strategic and targeted communication with UNEP FI’s member banks.
• Develop a communications strategy for communication towards relevant stakeholders and the broader banking industry
• Implement the developed communications strategies.

Outputs and Deliverables:
• Communications plan for the consultation phase of the Principles
• Communications strategy and plan for the signing of the Principles in Sept. 2019
• Communications strategy and plan for promoting uptake and further building the coalition after the Sep. 2019 signing
• Implementation of the developed communications plans/media campaigns in coordination with founding banks’ and endorsers communications departments.
• Internal awareness campaign with UN Environment.
• Content for the UNEP FI website, emails, presentations, print ads and social media.
• Updated online hub for banks to execute their campaigns about the Principles, particularly during the global consultation process in the first half of 2019.
• Updated library of the banks’ communications and collecting press clippings on the Principles.
• Coordination of media queries and interviews with banks’ CEOs and other stakeholders, contribute to social media and other communications.
• Strategy for more systematic, strategic and targeted communication with UNEP FI member banks and its implementation
• Strategy for more systematic, strategic and targeted communications towards relevant stakeholders and the wider banking industry and its implementation.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Team player with strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong internal and external relationships and networks. Motivated self-starter who enjoys working in a collaborative and international environment. Knowledge of sustainability initiatives in the finance industry. Strong writing/editing skills, proven ability to successfully execute communications strategies and to develop compelling narratives to further (behavioral) change processes.

Academic Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in one or several of the following areas, or related areas: communications, journalism, international relations, finance, business administration, environmental studies, management, sustainable development. Focus on communication of sustainability and environmental issues is an advantage.

Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience in communications, ideally in the financial services sector or at NGOs, academic organizations, standard-setting bodies, public agencies focused on sustainability for the financial sector. Experience in marketing and communication campaigns for large organizations at global level. Experience in public relations and external communications and strong, international network of ideally finance-related media contacts. Experience in developing and executing communications strategies and media campaigns. Experience in journalism is an advantage.

Language: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset. Excellent writing skills are required. Fluency in other languages is an advantage.
