Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UN Environment's Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities, industry and finance to develop and adopt policies, strategies, practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals, and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. This post will be based in Paris.

Responsibilities

Under the overall coordination of the Head of the Consumption and Production Unit and the supervision of the Programme Management Officer – Eco-labeling, the incumbent will support the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes, operations and other activities of the Unit related to sustainable consumption, consumer information and eco-labeling. He/ she will contribute to UNEP’s strategy and Programme of Work, Resource Efficiency sub-programme, by supporting the implementation of the projects “Advancing and Measuring Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) for a Low-Carbon Economy in Middle-Income and Newly Industrialized Countries" and "Driving sustainable consumption in Latin America with better product information and design”. Both activities also contribute to the progress of the Consumer Information Programme (CI-SCP), one of the approved Programmes of the One Planet Network.

• Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions. Such programmes / projects will focus on the promotion of sustainable consumption, consumer information and ecolabelling, within the context of the projects “Advancing and Measuring Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) for a Low-Carbon Economy in Middle-Income and Newly Industrialized Countries" and "Driving sustainable consumption in Latin America with better product information and design”. These initiatives will also contribute to the One Planet Network Consumer Information Programme.
• Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
• Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
• Assists in relevant policy development initiatives undertaken by the Resources and Markets Branch, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies, which are pertinent to the topics of sustainable consumption and consumer information.
• Assists in the development of linkages and coordination on the issues of sustainable consumption and consumer information with the One Planet Network programmes, and more specifically with the programmes on consumer information and on sustainable public procurement. Supports the role of the organization in the Multistakeholder Advisory Committee of the Consumer Information Programme of the One Planet Network.
• Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources. Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions. Contributes to the preparation of written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
• Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
• Performs other duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental management, law, economics, international relations or a related field. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in the specified fields with a minimum of two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management is required. Experience in sustainable consumption, consumer information and the adoption of eco-labelling or voluntary sustainability standards at policy or company level is required. Experience at international level and in the UN system is desirable; practical experience in dealing with public and private institutions is an advantage.

Languages

Fluency in English language (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French language is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include substantive assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

This is a project post and is funded for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
