Cadre organisationnel

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. Within delegated authority, under supervision of the Leader, Water and Sanitation Unit, the Public Information Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsabilités

1.Research and compilation of information with respect to public information initiatives. Performs research to identify representatives of the press, NGOs, academic and research institutes which have active or potential interests in Basic services; compiles and presents information for use in the preparation and production of information products/services, such as news and social media round-up, official documents, reports, web pages, leaflets and booklets in support of outreach activities to identified press, NGOs, academic and research institutes.
2.Serves as a focal point on the reporting of programmatic activities implemented by the Urban Basic Services Branch; compiles and/or produces information on a wide range of activities, liaising with relevant colleagues and offices; develops data collection mechanism to gather information on relevant audiences and/or clients.
3.Coordinates electronic dissemination of programmes; prepares, maintains and updates UN-Habitat & Urban basic services social media accounts and other official online outlets, to include drafting and editing content; uploads/downloads audio / video files and maintains file structures and digital repositories; Identifies and prepares new material for inclusion on appropriate social media accounts and other online outlets by: researching various information sources for relevant material and cross-checking information with author offices as required.
4.Provides specialized assistance to officers in the production and delivery of information communications products and services.
5.Organizes media coverage of important events; liaises with news and publications agencies, public relations firms, UN photographers, etc. to provide notice of, and information on, upcoming meetings, briefings and special events and to ascertain coverage requirements; coordinates technical arrangements and organizes and allocates space for visiting news, photo, TV and film personnel; evaluates and processes applications for UN security clearances/accreditations.
6.Organizes and executes special events, coordinating with diverse partners and the media to highlight and publicize key events; Participates in the planning and coordination of major exhibits; liaises with relevant departments/agencies; drafts and edits reports, production schedules, press releases and related texts, and correspondence related to the planning and production of exhibits.
7.Assists in the electronic dissemination of programme outputs; prepares, maintains and updates on-line reporting systems, to include drafting and editing content; uploads and/or downloads supporting files and maintains file structure on a shared folder. Identifies and prepares new material for inclusion in appropriate reporting systems by: researching various information sources for relevant material and cross-checking information with author offices as required; identifying, retrieving and downloading pertinent documentation and other information.
8.Manages, updates and further develops internal databases; updates web site, to include drafting and editing content; assists in design, development and maintenance of Internet applications; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases.
9.Serves as photographic assistant by producing digital imaging, producing photo prints, and serving as back-up photographer; write captions for UN photos.
10.Using relevant computer software, creates designs in appropriate format for promotional material, e.g. brochures, presentational materials, announcements, infographics; ensures that photos, graphics, etc. are appropriate and conform to UN standards for print materials. Ensures availability and appropriate packaging of products for distribution at special events, exhibits, conferences, media functions, etc.
11.Assists in the production, script writing and editing of video/film projects, radio programmes or website projects; tracks all production material; produces scripts, cue cards, etc., selects and catalogs visual materials for inclusion in productions, and obtains requisite clearances and copyrights.
12.Provides guidance/training to junior staff and performing any other duties.

Formation

High school diploma or equivalent and any other professional qualifications. Supplemental courses/formal training in Public relations, journalism, communications, graphic design, international broadcasting would be an asset.

Expérience professionnelle

A minimum of five years of experience in communication, public relations, journalism or related area is required. Work experience in special events and social media platforms management is required. Experience in international project work and educational outreach is desirable. Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite, such as Photoshop, In Design is desirable.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Appointment against this post is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension. This job opening is only open to the staff members of the United Nations Secretariat who (1) serve in the duty station specified in the job opening; (2) hold a permanent, continuing or fixed-term appointment; and (3) have been appointed following the review of the Central Review Panel, or upon meeting other regular requirements for the duty station, job level and category and functional area.
