Org. Setting and Reporting

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

This position is located in the Conference Management Unit (CMU), Commercial and General Services Section, Division of Administration (DA) of ESCAP. The incumbent reports to the Supervisor of Conference Technology Team.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Conference Technology Team with overall supervision of the Chief, Conference Management Unit, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions:

• Uses basic technical skills to install, configure, operate, and test audio, video conference and desktop video conference hardware/software using available communication and network connectivity for meeting preparation in various locations throughout ESCAP.
• Operates a variety of office equipment including the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) system, the digital signage system, the Public Address (PA) system and the zone announcement system for emergency announcements.
• Assists in processing the recording of meeting proceedings duplicating of CDs, DVDs and other audio file formats, and converts audio and video formats as necessary.
• Tests equipment to ensure they are in good and safe working condition.
• Provides technical assistance to other Technicians when required and performs inventory management of equipment, wirings, and accessories to avoid any shortages.
• Performs equipment additions, removals, repairs, replacements and inspections.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Ability to apply knowledge and technical skills to install and test relevant equipment, provide maintenance services and user support. Ability to assist with analog and digital transmission facility testing and trouble-shooting. Education

High school diploma or equivalent. A first level university degree may be accepted in lieu of one year of experience.

Work Experience

At least one year of experience in conference technology systems or telecommunications is required. Previous work experience with the United Nations and/or other international organizations would be desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Qualified applicants may be evaluated through a competency-based interview and/or other assessment methods.

Special Notice

Appointment against this post is on a local basis; candidates shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of the ESCAP office, irrespective of nationality and length of time the candidate may have been in the country. If no suitable local candidate is identified, candidates located elsewhere may be considered. The candidate is responsible for any expenses incurred in taking the relevant examinations at the duty station, and of any costs related to traveling and relocating to the duty station in the event of an employment offer.

This post is funded from extra budgetary resources. The initial appointment is for a period of one year. Extension of appointment is subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Must have passed the United Nations Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally- administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters.
