Result of Service

The consultant will contribute to raising the visibility of the Convention through facilitating a wide outreach with the media both internationally and within Sri Lanka, ensuring a well-informed and wide coverage of CITES CoP18.

Expected duration

30 working days during the period 15 April to 15 June 2019.
Working days distributed as follows:
• 15 April to 15 May – average two days per week, estimated to a total of 10 working days, and
• 15 May to 15 June estimated to 20 working days

Duties and Responsibilities

The CITES Secretariat requires the service of a media expert to assist it with the preparation of media-related activities before, at and immediately at the conclusion of the 18th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CITES CoP18) to be held in Colombo from 23 May to 3 June 2019.

To that effect, the consultant will have the following responsibilities:
Before CITES CoP18
1. Assist in the development of a press kit and media strategy for CITES CoP18.
2. Liaise with journalists and media representatives, as required.
3. Assist in the planning, organization, production and distribution of press releases, other news stories such as op-eds and pre-CoP18 briefing(s).

During CITES CoP18
4. Travel to CoP18 at Colombo, Sri Lanka as part of the Secretariat delegation (dates likely to be 21 May and 5 June 2019, including travel time).
5. Assist in all aspects of the management of the CoP 18 press working area at the Conference Centre in Colombo, Sri Lanka, including in the main conference areas.
6. Provide media support on site at the venue of CoP 18, including the preparation of press releases and the management of daily press conferences.
7. Interact with CITES and Host country staff, Parties, journalists and all media representatives.
8. Maintain full records of all media-related correspondence on CoP 18 and provide a written report to the Secretariat on all media associated with the CoP within seven days of the completion of the meeting.
9. Participate in the day-to-day work of the CITES Secretariat, i.e. staff meetings, preparing documents and attending CITES meetings, as required.

Qualifications/special skills

The consultant requested for this work should have the following qualifications and experiences.
• Previous significant professional experience in media activities is required.
• Deep experience in dealing with the media in an international setting is required.
• Fluent in English – oral and written – is required.
• Experience of working with media representatives is required.
• Familiarity with the UN System and international conventions is required.
• Ability to work against tight deadlines; awareness of and respect for political sensitivities and cultural differences is required.
• Fluency French and/or Spanish (in addition to English) would be an advantage.
