Result of Service

Work Location

Expected duration

The duration of the contract is from 20 March 2019 to 19 April 2019 (20 working days).

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the voice for the environment within the United Nations system. UN Environment acts as a catalyst, advocate, educator and facilitator to promote the wise use and sustainable development of the global environment. UN Environment's Economy division plays a leading role in the Green Economy Initiative (GEI), launched by UN Environment in 2008. The GEI aims to transition national economies onto a new path, in which jobs and output growth are driven by increased investment in green sectors, and by a switch of consumers’ preferences towards environmentally friendly goods and services.

Located within Economy Division, the Resources and Markets Branch examines how economics, trade, and finance interact with the environment and contribute to sustainable development at the local, national, regional, and global levels. Located in Geneva, it heads the Green Economy Initiative to assist countries in integrating environmental considerations into economic and trade policies.

UN Environment is working with the UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) and the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment to develop a Green Economy Textbook for an international audience. Green Economy was recognized as an important tool for achieving sustainable development in the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012 (Rio+20), and this role was reinforced in UNEP’s 2013 Governing Council Decision and 2014 United Nations Environment Assembly resolution.

The overall objective of the textbook, which is going to be made available online to students globally, is to catalyze international sustainable development through providing a comprehensive and systematic analytical framework of green economy to post-graduate and higher-level students to assist their learning and research in this field. Enriched with regional perspectives, this textbook will consolidate and build on the knowledge surrounding green economy practices by disseminating theory, frameworks and best practices to those who can in turn expand on current understanding. The book will be made available on a stand-alone website, which will be linked to the website of the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE). To assist with the final phase of the book’s online publishing process, UN Environment is seeking a consultant to copy-edit draft chapters and undertake a final review of chapters towards assuring overall alignment between chapters and with overall theme of the publication, in close cooperation with the co-editors of the book. UN Environment currently does not have the capacity in-house to complete these activities and is, therefore, recruiting a short-term consultant.

Specific tasks and responsibilities per outputs:

• Copyedit all 12 chapters as provided by UN Environment (see Annex 1 for the structure and outline of the textbook) following UN editorial guidelines (, including reviewing and correcting all written materials to improve accuracy, readability, and fitness for the purpose of the textbook, and ensuring that the book is free of error, omission, inconsistency, and repetition, to the satisfaction of UN Environment.

• Liaise, under the guidance of UN Environment, with the book’s co-editors and the book’s online publishing company to make any textual adjustment as may be required for the purpose of online publication in an interactive format. .

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Master in Environment, Environmental Economics, Economics, English, Editing, Communications, or related field.
Experience: A consultant with 3-5 years of experience in communications and content development in the fields of environmental economics, environmental policy, green economy and sustainability. Specifically, this should include experience in copy-editing and web writing, as well as considerable experience in editing and the reviewing of academic publications.
