Duties and Responsibilities

As a contribution to strengthening United Nations leadership in furthering the global sustainability agenda and supporting the UN Secretary-General’s determination to maintain internal sustainability as top priority, the Senior Officials of the UN Environment Management Group (EMG) initiated a process in 2012 to peer review the environmental profile and performance of its members, focusing on corporate environmental management. Since then, several peer reviews have been undertaken with a focus on headquarter facilities.

At their 24th meeting in 2018, the EMG Senior Officials took note of the review in progress of the UNHCR refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya and welcomed a continuation of the peer review process by initiating a review of the UN Economic Commission of Africa (ECA).

Serving as the lead technical advisor to the EMG for the peer review process of UN organizations, the consultant will undertake the following tasks:

1. Finalize the peer review report of the UNHCR compound and refugee
camps in Kakuma, Kenya, including recommendations on improving environmental management in the related buildings and facilities as per comments provided by the UNHCR Headquarters;

2. Initiate the peer review of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). This will include providing technical recommendations on the themes and scope of the review, an initial report on the feasibility of the peer review following a fact-finding mission and preparation and finalization of the peer review report and its submission to the EMG Secretariat.
