Cadre organisationnel

The Implementation Support Section, Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch, (ISS/OCB) Division for Treaty Affairs, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime internship is for six months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department. THE ISS/OCB assists States in taking effective, practical steps, in line with the provisions of the Transnational Organized Crime Convention, to fight organized crime. It strengthens the institutional and operational capacity of law enforcement and judicial bodies to investigate, prosecute and adjudicate serious crimes, including organized crime; enhances international cooperation between criminal justice practitioners; and collects, assesses and disseminates best practices in combating organized crime.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsabilités

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. The objective for the intern is to gain an understanding of how technical assistance is provided to Member States to support them in their fight against organized crime and for the intern to assist ISS/OCB in its work. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

- Assist ISS/OCB in the administration of its projects (Container Control Programme, etc.) to support Member States in their fight against organized crime.

- Assist with any other ad hoc requests such as the drafting, reviewing and editing of briefing notes, reports, studies or papers.

- Assist with the preparation of any workshops or conferences that are held by OCB/ISS in furtherance of its work.

Formation

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
• Be computer literate in standard software applications;
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Expérience professionnelle

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
