Background and Organizational Setting
Under the aegis of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 46/182, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has established the Field Information Services (FIS) section as an integral part of the Corporate Programme Division (CPD). FIS is responsible for strengthening the information management capacity of OCHA in both disaster preparedness and response. The roles of the section are:

- Facilitate the effective strategic management of OCHA’s field information domain, i.e. the range and volume of information that OCHA acquires, generates and disseminates.

- Provide coordination and leadership in the application of information management in disaster preparedness and response, helping to assure that the information resources and information management expertise required by OCHA to function effectively in emergencies is available.

- Build sustainable partnerships in advance of disasters that directly contribute to the predictable exchange of information in emergencies.


The intern’s daily responsibilities will consist of supporting the overall goals and objective of the Section by:

• Working with FIS and the Visual Information Unit (VIU) to finalize the template version of core operational products used in the field;

• Using a core set of OCHA standard products to re-create the products in various platforms ranging from Microsoft Office to the latest online info-graphic tools; Convert several existing info-graphic templates into web-based editable documents on collaborative platforms such as Google Docs, Live Docs, etc.;

• Liaise with the VIU during the update of OCHA's icon set and convert new/updated icons into appropriate image formats for the purpose of use in above templates,
reports, and websites;

• Investigating alternative solutions to create info-graphic products by non-graphic-expert professionals (e.g. Humanitarian Affairs Officers in OCHA country offices);

• Investigating tools and processes for incorporation of resulting products into OCHA (and other) websites.

Applicant must be currently enrolled in an advanced-level university degree programme or higher (i.e. Masters, graduate, post-graduate, doctorate degree or equivalent), preferably in Media and/or Communications, Graphic Design and/or Multimedia Arts, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Cartography, Information Technology (GIS, Graphic Design) or a related field. Enrolment in any of the above-mentioned disciplines must cover the entire duration of the internship. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, having completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree, may be seriously considered for an internship.

Expérience professionnelle

Applicant is not required to have professional working experience for participation in the internship programme however s/he must be experienced in Adobe Illustrator CS + or similar programmes.
Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software (version 9.0 or higher) is strongly desirable. Experience in the use of Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign and Macromedia Flash and standard office software applications (i.e. advanced user certification of MS Access, MS Excel, MS Project and MS Word) is a strong asset. Experience in online info-graphic creation tools is an advamtage. Knowledge and experience of database development and management, and online collaborative tools would be an asset.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English (both written and verbal skills) is required. Knowledge of other working language of the UN Secretariat, French in particular, is desirable.

The internship programme is an UNPAID, full-time opportunity, interns are expected to work five days (Monday to Friday) per week (40 hours) within the Section to which s/he is assigned. This internship will for an initial period of three months with an opportunity for extension (not exceeding a combined period of 6 months). All interns are responsible for travel, accommodation, medical insurance, visas, and living expenses for the duration of their service. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above carrying international recruitment status in the Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of their internship.
