Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UN Environment’s Regional Office for Europe (Europe Office) – based in Geneva – promotes intergovernmental policy dialogue and regional cooperation, increases national capacity for environmental management and response emergencies, raises awareness and enhances information exchange, and translates global policies into regional action.

Within the Europe Office, UN Environment’s Brussels Office aims at establishing regular and strategic relations with the European Union institutions (European Commission, European External Action Service, European Parliament, Council, Economic and Social Committee), and supports related partnership building efforts, through intelligence gathering, information exchanges, networking, as well as monitoring of policies and funding opportunities from the EU. The office also facilitates UN Environment’s staff contacts with the EU, represents UN Environment at meetings/conferences and supports the dialogue between UN Environment and the EU both at policy and programmatic levels.

The role of outreach & information in the Brussels Office is closely linked to policy dialogue with the EU as well as programmatic partnerships. In practice, what this means is exploring opportunities for partnership with EU institutions, and ensuring a good flow of information and discussion in the spirit of partnership with the EU institutions, other UN entities & key partners.

The intern selected will gain pragmatic and professional experience of working at UN Environment as well as engaging with various EU institutions and to a lesser extent with the general public. S/he will also gain an introduction to the broad range of UN & UN Environment activities worldwide.

The UN Environment Brussels internship is for six (6) months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.


Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Office or designated Policy and Programmatic Officer, the intern will contribute to the following areas of work:

• Policy
-Policy/institutional monitoring, through (i) support to the development of UNEP Brussels office and EU policy/institutional alerts and (ii) screening of information on policy priorities in the EU institutions, including regional cooperation and latest evolutions of the external dimension of EU policies on environment/climate change;
-Participate at conferences and events as requested and report back accordingly;
-Attend European Parliament sessions (and other EU institutions events) when requested and report back;
-Support in other tasks requested, including taking minutes from meetings, etc.

• Communication
-Contribute to strengthening of the communication and visibility activities;
-Cooperation on the office monthly newsletter and the intranet;
-Support UN Environment events and campaigns in Brussels (e.g. UN Day, Green Week, World Environment Day, etc.);

• possible: Programmatic & resource mobilization
-Contribute to the identification of joint success stories leveraged within the wider UN Environment and the ECs cooperation;
-Contribute to the development of guidelines & tools on resource mobilization (such as factsheets, training modules, etc.)
-Provide assistance to any meeting by taking notes and keeping record of files;
-Support in other tasks requested, including the proofreading and editing of documents.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

- Demonstrated interest in Environmental issues, the United Nations, and/or international governance.
- Knowledge and Interest in the European Union’s institutions and policies in the areas of climate change; disasters and conflicts; ecosystem management; environmental governance; hazardous substances and waste; resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production
-Knowledge and Interest in the European Union’s institutions and policies.

-Preferred area of study: international relations/European studies, environment or other relevant studies

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
