Duties and Responsibilities

BACKGROUND:

UN-Habitat is looking for a web developer to help build and maintain its corporate website in Drupal 8. The duration of the assignment will be 7 months, starting from 1 July 2019 to 31 January 2020. The work is to be carried out onsite.
The position requires the work time to be carried out for the Communications Branch and the Housing and Slum Upgrading Branch. The Communications Branch is responsible for positioning UN-Habitat as a partner of choice and as a global advocate for sustainable urban development. The Branch works to promote UN-Habitat’s policies, results and knowledge to partners, the media and the public.
On a day-to-day basis, the consultant shall report to the Head of the Production Unit in the Communications Branch and the Branch Coordinator of the Housing and Slum Upgrading Branch.
OBJECTIVE OF THE POST AND SPECIFIC TASKS:
Under the overall guidance of the Branch Coordinator of the Housing and Slum Upgrading Branch and the direct supervision of the Head of Production, the web developer will be responsible for:
• Web development, primarily in Drupal and other open source systems
• Collaborate with designers, writers, project managers, clients and other developers to ensure effectiveness and quality
• Take part in the technical reviews and testing processes
• Work with other team members and stakeholders
• Create and update documentation
• Interpret user requirements and translate these into systems specifications;
• Ensure data security and consistency of online applications
• Monitor and analyze the pattern of visits to the relevant sites, keep statistics on the number of hits to each of them and present a monthly report on his/her findings
• Help prepare internal policies and procedures on the use of websites

Qualifications/special skills

Skills:
• Knowledge of Information architecture and taxonomy
• Expert problem solver and technical innovator. Able to identify, understand, and implement viable new technologies.
Academic Qualifications: University degree in information technology, computer science, information science or related discipline required.
Experience: • 5 years of demonstrated experience in web design and development including mobile and responsive design using open source software, preferably Drupal
• Experience in HTML, CSS, PHP, AJAX, Javascript and MySQL required
• Experience in the software development lifecycle, including design, functional and technical requirements, coding, debugging, testing, release and operation support.
• Experience with server-side JS development, like node.js, object oriented programming; agile workflows; and automated testing
• Experience with software development best practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing and operations
• Strong database management skills
• Experience with Content Management System design, build and integration. Advanced proficiencies in developing/implementing content in Drupal core modules, contributed modules, and custom modules
• Experience with GIT version control and Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery workflows.
• Experience and knowledge in web standards and Search engine optimization are added advantage.
Language: Good command of English is required
