Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Specifically, UN Environment aims to support countries in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and in the compliance of the objectives acquired in the Paris Agreement and the priority actions defined in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of the countries.
The overall objective of UN Environment´s Sub-programme on Climate Change is to strengthen the ability of countries to move towards climate-resilient and low emission strategies for sustainable development and human well-being. The expected accomplishment regarding climate change adaptation is that adaptation approaches, including an ecosystem-based approach, are implemented and integrated into key sectoral and national development strategies to reduce vulnerability and strengthen resilience to climate change impacts. Furthermore, the UN Environment´s Sub-programme on Climate Change is also committed to ensure that crosscutting issues such as gender equity and women empowerment are effectively undertaken in the development of the its tasks to guarantee an equitable development in line with its adaptation objectives.
Under the direct supervision of the Climate Change Coordinator in UNEP/ROLAC, the intern(s) will work within small teams and be highly involved in day-to-day activities of the UN Environment Climate Change unit for Latin and the America. The intern(s) will be involved in the development of climate change projects and initiatives pertaining to three main areas of action: adaptation, mitigation and climate transparency, depending on their area of interest and expertise.
Three interns are sought, each for six months internship period. The position is advertised to cover two internship rotations (2019-2/2020-1). Candidates should make clear in their cover letters which rotation and which area of action (adaptation, mitigation, climate transparency) they wish to be considered for.
The duration of the Internship is for six months for all three areas of action. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Climate Change Unit.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Adaptation to climate change:
In the area of adaptation, the climate change unit has a broad portfolio of on-going projects and initiatives targeted at increasing the countries resilience to the detrimental effects of climate change. This is done through: i) strengthening the institutional and technical capacities of countries, ii) mobilizing funds and technology for the implementation of innovative adaptation actions, and iii) fostering regional cooperation and peer-to-peer learning.
The intern selected to support the adaptation team is expected to have a strong focus and interest in topics such as: local and national adaptation planning, Ecosystem based Adaptation and other adaptation approaches, natural resource management and financing and knowledge management.

Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will support the following activities:
•Research and analysis on the status of climate change policies and strategies, requiring desktop research, communications with project partners and communications with relevant ministries.
•Development of analysis, briefings and presentations for regional and national workshops and seminars on adaptation to climate change. When required, the intern will also support the general organization of events, including sending of invitations to participants/speakers, developing agendas, and printing of materials.
•Support partnership building with adaptation to climate change stockholders, including international agencies; national governments; bi-lateral donors; and environmental organizations. The intern will support the development of presentations for meetings with prospective partners and development of project proposals.
•Support the development of communications including that of electronic newsletters while also managing a contact database for countries interested in developing new climate change initiatives.
•Support the development, revision, and implementation of Climate Change Adaptation projects/programmes in the region including the National Adaptation Plans.
•Support the implementation of regional and national projects on adaptation to climate change. The intern will support the development of Terms of Reference, the revision products derived from the project execution and the elaboration of reports to main donors.


Mitigation to Climate Change:
In the area of mitigation, the climate change unit has a broad portfolio of on-going projects and initiatives focused on electric mobility, energy efficiency and distributed energy resources, as key sectors to accelerate emission reduction in the energy sector. This is done through: i) technical assistance, ii) resource mobilization, iii) capacity buildings and iv) knowledge creation.
The intern selected to support the mitigation team is expected to have a strong focus and interest in topics such as: technology assessment of electric drive technology and energy systems, local and national mitigation planning, policy analysis, systematization of lessons learned and management of capacity building platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will support the following activities:
•Research and analysis on the status of climate change policies and strategies, requiring desktop research, communications with project partners and communications with relevant ministries. More specifically, support in the development and publication of a regional report on electric mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean.
•Development of analysis, briefings and presentations for regional and national workshops and seminars on electric mobility and energy systems. When required, the intern will also support the general organization of events, including sending of invitations to participants/speakers, developing agendas, and printing of materials.
•Support partnership building with relevant stakeholders, including international agencies; national governments; private sector; and non-governmental organizations. The intern will support the development of presentations for meetings with prospective partners and development of project proposals.
•Support the development of MOVE Electric Mobility online platform (www.movelatam.org), the electronic newsletters and the contact database for countries interested in developing new climate change initiatives.
•Support the development, revision, and implementation of Climate Change Mitigation projects/programmes in the region.
•Support the implementation of regional and national projects on climate change mitigation. The intern will support the development of Terms of Reference, the revision products derived from the project execution and the elaboration of reports to main donors.

Climate Transparency:
The intern selected to support the Climate Transparency Centre is expected to have a strong focus and interest in topics such as: implementation of the Enhanced Transparency Framework of the Paris Agreement in the region, design and implementation of MRV and M&E systems, mitigation/adaptation metrics, NDC Tracking/updating, natural resource management and financing, and knowledge management.

Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will support the following activities:
•Research and analysis on the status of climate transparency policies, initiatives, programmes or strategies, requiring desktop research, communications with project partners and communications with relevant ministries.
•Development of analysis, briefings and presentations for regional and national workshops and seminars on climate transparency. When required, the intern will also support the general organization of events, including sending of invitations to participants/speakers, developing agendas, and printing of materials.
•Support partnership building with climate transparency stakeholders, including international agencies; national governments; bi-lateral donors; and environmental organizations. The intern will support the development of presentations for meetings with prospective partners and development of project proposals.
•Support the development of communications including that of electronic newsletters while also managing a contact database for countries interested in developing new climate change initiatives.
•Support the development, revision, and implementation of Climate Transparency projects/programmes in the region including the CBIT projects ICAT projects, among others.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Final year undergraduate or master’s degree student in environmental policy, climate change, natural resource management, development, energy efficiency and/or related field of studies preffered.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Spanish are required, since work will require research and communication, including reading and interviews, in both languages. Working knowledge of French or other UN official languages is desirable.
