Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Political Affairs Section of the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to Yemen (OSESG-Yemen) in Amman and will support in the implementation of the Special Envoy's key mandate, including the provision of technical advice in the peace talks and bilateral consultations and facilitation for political arrangements aimed at the resumption of the political transition and restoration of state institutions. The Political Affairs Officer will report to the Senior Political Affairs Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Gathers, selects and analyses information received from different sources, including the press and social media, and produces spot reports, analytical notes and background papers in a timely manner.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the latest political trends and developments in general and in the areas of his/her assignment in particular and provides inputs on issues to senior colleagues in the Office.
• Coordinates with other sections of the Office to request inputs, reviews them, and compiles Office’s regular situational reports accordingly.
• Builds up and maintains networks with interlocutors at the national and subnational levels, other sectors of the UN and other international organizations, and the diplomatic community.
• Update computerised databases for the Section.
• Participates in field missions to countries within assigned areas of responsibility.
• Contributes to the Office’s reporting requirements, such as briefing notes, talking points and notes to file for meetings and briefings held by senior colleagues in the Office, including the Special Envoy
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience with UN operations working in or on Middle East and North Africa is desirable. Experience in political analysis and reporting is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge in Arabic is highly desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an informal interview.

Special Notice

• This position is temporarily available for a period of six months. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

• Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

• This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.

• Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.Submitting an application or selection for the current temporary job opening does not delay or increase the mandatory age of separation.

• Retirees above the mandatory age of separation who wish to be considered for the current temporary job opening must indicate the reason for their last separation as "retirement." Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
