Duties and Responsibilities

UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Sustainable UN (SUN) team has a mandate to make UNEP’s internal operations more environmentally sustainable. The main instrument for achieving this has been the use of the Environment Management System (EMS). The UNEP EMS, after an initial 4-year cycle, needs to be reviewed. In addition, work on external reporting of the annual UNEP Greenhouse Gas emissions, mitigation and offsetting needs to continue together with the reporting on waste and water that have also recently been undertaken

The results from the reporting are also used to ascertain divisional carbon taxes and performance with UNEP. Flight emission results need to be analyzed in order to support travel reduction measures, in particular the use and strengthening of online meeting culture in UNEP. Lastly, the success of the joint UNEP-UNON waste management and recycling initiative at the UN Gigiri compound in Nairobi has caught the interest of the UN Secretariat’s and it has been suggested that UNEP and UNON create guidelines for the procurement of such services so as to help other UN System agencies replicate.

Moreover, the SUN unit in Geneva also requires help for the completion of the annual UN system environmental inventory, handling of data from some 65 UN agencies to create the annual Greening the Blue report and help in managing the Issue Management Group on Sustainability Management (IMG) with agenda and meeting preparations, note taking, input in the content, bulletin and generally network support (queries, best practices etc.)
