Org. Setting and Reporting

The Internship is located in the Visitors Service, United Nations Information Service UNIS, Vienna (Austria).

The Visitors Service seeks to enhance public understanding of the work and the role of the United Nations and its Vienna presence through guided tours and lectures. Welcoming some 55,000 visitors per year, the Visitors Service’s programmes include several types of specialized tours geared towards children and young people, and a tour of the Vienna International Centre’s fine art collection.

The Internship is for three months, starting in September with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the direct supervision of Professional staff of the Unit.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities
The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:
- Support the Unit’s Lecture Coordinator and/or Tour Coordinator to provide outstanding client service to visiting academic and professional groups, and/or the general public at the VIC’s Visitors Centre;
- Participate in activities, including special events, media promotions and social media campaigns, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the VIC and promote guided tours of the UN in Vienna in the tourist sector;
- Support the Unit in planning and conducting special programmes and events for children and youth;
- Assist with research, writing and/or production of information materials, exhibits, photos and/or films;
- Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation (OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION;

•Be computer literate in standard software applications

•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

DescriptionEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this Internship, fluency in oral and written English and German is highly desirable. Knowledge of a UNIS client country language (Hungarian, Slovak, Slovene) is an additional asset.
