Org. Setting and Reporting

The Department of Safety and Security is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system, ensure the maximum security for staff and eligible dependents as well as enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the programmes and activities of the United Nations System.

This position is located in the Security and Safety Section, Bangkok under the Department of Safety and Security. The incumbent reports to the Security Sergeant or supervising officer.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Security Sergeant, and overall supervision of the Chief, Security and Safety Section, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions:

1.Provides security coverage of entry points throughout the United Nations complex to prevent entry to unauthorized persons and the unauthorized removal of UN property.

2.Screens all personnel, packages and vehicles entering the premises including clearance through metal detectors; checks packages, both visually and by use of x-ray equipment; identifies and retains custody of weapons entering the premises with the authority to either confiscate or return said weapons upon owners' exit from the premises.

3.Conducts exterior, garage, garden and watch-tour patrols throughout the compound for the purpose of intercepting unauthorized persons attempting to gain entry to the premises, reporting all security, fire and safety violations to the Security Control Centre.

4.Provides information and direction to all persons associated with the organization.

5.Controls, identifies and clears pedestrian and vehicular traffic entering and exiting the premises; maintains log books and records, as required.

6.Maintains alertness for any potential or actual breaches of security and any disturbances or unusual activity; and reports these immediately.

7.Ensures that all UN property being carried from the complex is checked for appropriate documentation.

8.Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement or military police or security field, or a first level university degree in criminal justice, security management or any other relevant area, with a minimum of 18 months experience in the security field.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Special Notice

Appointment against this post is on a local basis; candidates shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of the Department of Safety and Security, Bangkok office, irrespective of nationality and length of time the candidate may have been in the country. If no suitable local candidate is identified, candidates residing abroad may be considered. The candidate is responsible for any expenses incurred in taking the relevant examinations at the duty station, and of any costs related to traveling and relocating to the duty station in the event of an employment offer.

This Temporary Job Opening (TJO) is open to both internal and external candidates, including staff members on temporary appointments. Priority consideration will be given to serving staff members holding Fixed-Term Appointments followed by those holding Temporary Appointments. Selection of an external candidate will be subject to exceptional approval.

This is a temporary position and will be available until 31 December 2019. If selected, an internal candidate will be on temporary assignment to the post; an external candidate will initially be offered a temporary appointment. Any extension of appointment is subject to satisfactory performance and continued availability of the post.

Must have passed the United Nations Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters and the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT).

United Nations Considerations

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
