Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is the

UN Secretariat department responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to complex emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA also ensures that there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort. Under the aegis of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 46/182, OCHA has established the Assessment, Planning and Monitoring Branch (APMB), as an integral part of the Coordination Division (CD). APMB helps OCHA and partners deliver more effective joint responses using innovative, state of the art coordination tools and services. The work of the Branch focuses on the key activities which enable effective coordination: needs assessment and analysis, humanitarian response planning and continuous monitoring. APMB aims to ensure OCHA and partner staff have the skills, tools and technical support needed to meet the needs of people affected by crises through a well-coordinated collective response effort, within the framework of a rigorous humanitarian programme cycle. The intern shall assist in the research and development of communication materials and website presence to enhance the visibility of information relating to the humanitarian programme cycle (HPC); research various thematic and political initiatives of relevance to the branch; support the development, editing and financial tracking of appeals documents; assist in the organization of programme cycle training events, as well as other initiatives. APMB consists of Needs and Response Analysis Section-(NARAS), Monitoring Platforms and Tools Section -(MPTS) and Humanitarian Development Nexus Section-(HDNS).


The internship will be based in Geneva, Switzerland, and the intern will under the guidance and supervision of a Humanitarian Affairs Officer within APMB. This internship is being offered for a minimum period of three (3) months with an estimated start date in September 2019.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, duties may include but are not limited to: developing info-graphic and video-based products for promotional and explanatory purposes on the HPC process and associated on-line tools; creating a variety of info-graphics to explain existing and new information management tools, processes, skills, etc.; creating 2D animation products to explain existing and new information management tools, process, skills, etc.; creating videos (both regular and stop-motion) to explain existing and new information management tools, process, skills, etc; finalising the above using or leveraging creative and/ or new techniques for the humanitarian community (e.g. using stop motion lego movies to make explanation fun and engaging); investigating and designing creative marketing plans and/ or outreach plans for the products being created; and performing related tasks as requested by supervisor, as appropriate.

Education

Applicants must be enrolled in a Bachelor's (final year), Post graduate, Master's or Ph.D. programme or equivalent, preferably in media and/ or communications, graphic design and/or multimedia arts, geography, geographic information systems (GIS), cartography, information technology (graphic design) or a related field. Applicants that have successfully completed an academic programme in a discipline mentioned above must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional working experience for participation in the internship program though any academic and/ or practical experience in adobe illustrator cs + or similar programmes is an advantage. Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software (version 9.0 or higher) is strongly desirable. Experience in the use of Adobe in design and after effects is an asset. Open source equivalent experience is also very welcome. Experience scripting, creating and post production of both animated and real-life videos an asset. Experience in use of standard software applications, specifically those mentioned above, is highly desirable. Applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations, a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter and; have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is an advantage. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

The Programme is unpaid and full-time. The intern should adhere to the established official weekly working hours of respective duty station (if based in a field-office location); the general working hours at United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) are 40 hours per week, from 8.30 until 5.30 with one hour for a lunch break. All costs associated to the internship are to be borne by the intern, specifically: travel, visas, accommodation/ living expenses and medical insurance for the entire duration of the internship.
