Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Trade and Poverty Branch of the Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes (ALDC) in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Economics Affairs Officer will report to the Head of the Branch.


Under the guidance of the Head of the Trade and Poverty Branch, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

• Undertakes research on issues related to the linkages between trade, growth and poverty reduction in LDCs and Africa in the context of trends in global income inequality and global interdependence. In this context, the incumbent will examine emerging trends in trade and poverty within different national development paths and draft analytical papers and issue notes as well as draft policy briefs and other materials suitable for policy makers.

• Contributes as required to the preparation of the Least Developed Countries Report and the Economic Development in Africa Report, drawing in particular on analysis of links between trade, growth and poverty from a development perspective and within a global context- To this extent, the incumbent will drafts inputs for such reports; translates research findings into outputs for diverse audiences, including both researchers and policy-makers and; organizes meetings with research institutes and governments stakeholders on UNCTAD’s research and analysis.

• Organizes expert meetings and seminars in relation to the work programme on trade and poverty, for which s/he will identify the themes for panels in close collaboration with colleagues in the relevant divisions; prepares concept notes for the expert meetings and; makes presentations during expert meetings on trade and poverty.

• Links the research findings with operational activities supporting the integration of trade in national development strategies. In this context, the incumbent will establish contacts with relevant ministries to assist in identifying appropriate policy recommendations and: collaborate closely with institutions on the ground such as ADB, RECs and African think-tanks in order to identify national approaches on trade and poverty.

• Works with the Head of the Trade and Poverty Branch to maintain relations with other United Nations agencies and development practitioners, for which the incumbent will establish and/or maintain regular contacts and exchange of information with DESA, UNDP, ILO, the World Bank and IMF; attend meetings and make presentations to the above-mentioned entities and; organize joint workshops with external institutions to discuss research findings.

• Coordinates preparation of speeches for senior staff, and to this end, undertakes research on specific topics to include in speeches for the Secretary-General of UNCTAD and the Director of ALDC and provides relevant statistics and indicators to be included in those speeches.

• Undertakes necessary management of the work of consultants.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics, international development or related field, is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of proven experience in development-related policy analysis may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and policy analysis on international development issues is required.
Experience in the analysis of inequality, employment, poverty, or related issues is desirable.
Experience managing research projects is desirable.
Publications on international trade or poverty is desirable.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of French is desirable.


Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

United Nations Considerations
