Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Conference Support Section (CSS), Corruption and Economic Crime Branch (CEB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The Associate Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer reports to the Chief of the Section and/or other senior officers.

Responsibilities

Within assigned authority, the Associate Crime Prevention and Criminal Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

•Assist in providing substantive and organizational input for the implementation of the UN Convention against Corruption;
•Assist in planning and performing a cluster of specialized tasks in support of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption with a particular focus on substantive contributions and analytical support to the Conference;
•Assist in providing specialized support to Member States for the full implementation of the Convention, with focus on assistance for the full incorporation of the Convention in domestic legal and regulatory systems;
•Assist in organizing special events and activities for promoting the ratification and implementation of the Convention; carries out required liaison and coordination with services, external partners and government representatives;
•Assist in fostering collaboration with intergovernmental, non-governmental and business organizations; propose and undertake required activities and maintain regular contact and coordination with concerned actors;
•Assist in planning and implementing the substantive and organizational preparations for meetings; organize and service meetings;
•Contribute to the preparation of briefing notes, substantive documentation and reports; prepare summary analysis of position papers and substantive submissions;
•Carry out required research and compile substantive and statistical information;
•As required, contribute to the preparation of the Section’s overall work plans, activities, programme budget, advocacy, public information and resource mobilization efforts;
•Performs other work related duties as required.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law or another relevant discipline, with a specialization in criminal law and/or international law, or related area, is required. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of relevant work experience in the area of crime prevention and criminal justice issues, preferably with a focus on corruption and economic crime or closely related issues, as well as in international cooperation in criminal matters is required.
Familiarity/experience with technical assistance delivery, particularly legislative assistance and multilateral cooperation in crime prevention matters and in servicing intergovernmental bodies is desirable.
A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Languages

English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in English is required and working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is highly desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

This position is temporarily available until 31 August 2020. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

• Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

• This temporary job opening may be limited to "internal candidates," who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.

• Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.
