Result of Service

The services will be used by the Secretariat to provide assistance as part of the Work Programme on investment and impact and by the Initiative as a whole – and in particular the UNEP FI Secretariat and its partners on the project.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a strategic public-private partnership between UNEP and the global financial sector. UNEP FI works with approximately 220 financial institutions, which are signatories to the UNEP FI Statements of Environmental Commitment, and a range of partners and organizations, to develop and promote linkages between the environment, sustainability and financial performance. Through its work-streams and regional activities, comprehensive work programme, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution strategies and operations.

UNEP FI requires a consultant to assist with the research, writing and delivery of a report the programme “A Legal Framework for Impact.”

About the Project: A Legal Framework for Impact
In January 2019, UNEP FI and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) launched the project A Legal Framework for Impact. The project aims to support the transition to assessing and accounting for the sustainability impact of investment decision-making as a core part of investment activity. With the support of a major law firm the project will investigate legal questions around mainstream investing for sustainability impact in order to understand and analyse how investors can manage dual duties (their fiduciary duty and sustainability impact duties) and what happens if they are in conflict.

During 2020 the project will continue working with a major law firm to conduct legal analysis and engaging investors and relevant experts on the integration of sustainability impact in investment decision-making, as well as launch the Legal Framework for Impact report and recommendations by the end of the year. That will include project communications support with the following tasks and requirements:

• Contribute to general communication and marketing strategy and efforts on the Legal Framework for Impact project, working in close collaboration with The Generation Foundation, PRI and UNEP FI teams.
• Provide content support for articles, blogs, external contributions that help promote the project on a regular basis.
• Assist in providing editorial support – including copy-editing and proof-reading for the initiative’s main documents and publications.
• Identify relevant publications and track media/outside mentions: reach out and manage relationships with relevant media and communications partners.
• Develop/implement a social media strategy for the project: manage the website, tweets, posts, and other possible communication tools; establish and use of key tracking and performance indicators (e.g. web and social media metrics).
• Assist in planning and convening outreach events to promote the Legal Framework for Impact project as appropriate.
• Support with outreach and promotion of specific project deliverables
• Produce media advisories / press releases and arrange press conferences / interviews for key events and deliverables of the initiative as appropriate.
• Contribute to UNEP FI, PRI and The Generation Foundation’s newsletters to promote the project.

The consultant will contribute in a comprehensive, timely and suitable format, with the coordination support from the UNEP FI Secretariat.
• Establish 2020 Communications plan.
• Organize and manage communications for at least 2 Legal Framework for Impact events.
• Support with events organization and comms coordination between PRI, UNEP FI and Generation Foundation.
• Produce and communicate at least 2 articles/blogs to relevant audience via relevant channels.
• Create a project slide deck.
• Update newsletters on a monthly basis.

The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of Chief Resources and Markets Branch,
and report directly to the Programme Officer Investment, UNEP FI.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Proven knowledge in the field of sustainable finance is required, particularly responsible investment and a strong understanding of ESG risks and legal frameworks for institutional investors around sustainability issues (e.g. pension funds, insurers); graduate degree (or equivalent qualifications) in law, economics, finance or related discipline; ability to cope with and manage complex projects and activities in an organised and timely manner; proven conceptual, analytical and evaluative skills; excellent communication (spoken and written) skills in English; ability to work independently and with remote teams. Proven track record in managing communications and marketing efforts for global projects or entities. Ability to interact with and relating to investment professionals at C-suite level. Team player with the ability to build strong internal relationships and networks and navigate between two complex and mutually supportive organizations

Academic Qualifications: Master’s Degree in one or several of the following areas is required: finance, law business administration, environmental studies, economics, management or sustainable development. Ideally, the consultant will have published in this area or have access to, or support from, relevant academic networks.

Experience: 5 years of relevant experience is required, especially in the financial services sector and/ or responsible investment, or at NGOs, academic organizations, standard-setting bodies.

Language: English is the working language of UNEP FI and is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
