Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship position is with the UN Library at Geneva in support of the Library Services Section.
The internship will last a maximum of 6 months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five (5) days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the Section.

Responsibilities

The intern will participate in a Library project to facilitate and promote worldwide access to UN resources. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Analyze and evaluate requests for UN resources
- Participate in the establishment of a survey on UN resources utilization
- Participate in the creation of online tools devoted to the promotion of UN knowledge and resources
- Participate in the establishment of a monitoring system for UN resources as they are produced
- Help to establish and maintain relationships with institutional partners who produce UN resources
- Participate in the indexing of selected UN documents under the project
- Perform other duties as required.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
-Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) preferably in International relations or Library or Archives Science or Information Technology Sciences; (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
-Be computer literate in standard software applications; knowledge of HTML and/or elementary programming skills is desirable;
-Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
-Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, the field of study should be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for is required.

Languages

Fluency in English and knowledge of French is required.

Candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa authorizing their stay in Switzerland before they depart for Geneva to begin their internship. While this is the overall responsibility of the selected candidate, we will provide information and supporting documents in this regard.

**In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
