Duties and Responsibilities

1. Background of the assignment:

UNICRI is a United Nations entity established in 1965 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.

The objective of the project “Mali (Dis-)Engagement and (Re-)Integration related to Terrorism” (MERIT) is to strengthen P/CVE efforts in Mali. In particular, UNICRI aims to:
• improving the rehabilitation and reintegration of Malian VEOs in and after prison;
• preventing violent extremism outside the prison context, by promoting alternatives to violence;

The project includes six modules:
Module 1 Risk assessment and classification of VEOs;
Module 2 Youth empowerment in promoting alternatives to violence;
Module 3 Mid-term monitoring and evaluation;
Module 4 Research on the impact of terrorism;
Module 5 Youth engagement in promoting alternatives to violence; and
Module 6 Final monitoring and evaluation.


2. Purpose of the assignment:
With specific reference to the project “Mali (Dis-)Engagement and (Re-)Integration related to Terrorism” (MERIT) the consultant will assist the Associate Programme Management Officer in conducting research within the framework of Module 4 of the project. In particular, the consultant will support with the conduction, transcription, coding and analysis of qualitative interviews and the drafting of the research report.

3. Specific tasks to be performed by the consultant:
Under the supervision of the Associate Programme Management Officer, the consultant will perform the following items:
• Participate in the conduction of 20 qualitative interviews with young Malian people (interviews to be audio-recorded and sample selected by the Associate Programme Management Officer)
• Transcribe and code 20 audio recorded qualitative interviews (interviews material in French)
• Analyze the transcribed and coded interviews and draft a research report (in English)
• Contribute to the dissemination of the research report by preparing relevant communication material to launch the report

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in the field of social sciences, international relations, political science or a similar field is required. Bachelor’s degree with combination of two additional years of relevant experience can be accepted in lieu of Master’s degree.
Experience: At least two (2) years of experience in conducting research in the field of social science is required. Previous experience in data collection and analysis in the field of security and crime prevention is required. Relevant research experience related to (or conducted in) the Sahel region is highly desirable.
Language: Fluency in English and French is required.
