Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 130 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and addresses the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Under the overall supervision of the IPBES Head of Communications, the Consultant will:

Conceptualise, produce and coordinate the marketing of an IPBES podcast series
• Lead the development of the overall concept and structure for a six-episode IPBES podcast series, including, but not limited to, the title, format, and tone of the narrative to ensure that the series has a cohesive and impactful brand identity matching the target audience of decision-makers.
• Develop a comprehensive pre-production, production and post-production plan – which will include designing the programme format, arranging logistics and delivering the final product according to an agreed timetable.
• Develop the podcast episodes including content, scripts and structure
• Advance a compelling narrative in each episode which would consist of a main recorded interview or monologue that would highlight a unique and unexpected voice from within the wider IPBES community - defined for this consultancy as individuals already engaged in some way with the IPBES work programme, whose expertise, priorities and perspectives are directly linked to those of the IPBES work programme. It will include experts, such as conservationists, biologists and others whose lives/professions are tied to biodiversity.
• Include interview(s) or discussions with members of the IPBES community in each episode. All interviews are expected to be of appropriate broadcast quality. The initial plan would be for two presenters, one who is an IPBES staff member, to introduce and conclude each episode interview/discussion. The pre-production will determine the logistical feasibility of this plan and will adapt accordingly.
• Organize the presenter/s’ logistics so that episode introductions and conclusions are recorded at similarly high levels of quality, where possible with both presenters in the same location.
• As required, organize and manage the logistics with an established network of professional affiliates to record interviews in situ.
• Record and produce a mixed trail to be used to promote the series online and to assist in the placement of the programme on appropriate podcast directories.
• The consultant will edit and mix the raw material to provide IPBES final products of broadcast quality.
• Design and implement a post-production placement and subsequent marketing strategy to bring the IPBES podcast series to the wider priority market, including paid advertising – on an appropriate platform or platforms.
• Produce audiograms (illustrated sound clips) which would be used in online promotion on social media platforms. Also, liaison and support with IPBES communications team on promotion of the series on the IPBES social media platforms.
• Monitor, analyze and report on the reach and other key metrics of each episode and of the series as a whole – developing key recommendations regarding future series.
