Duties and Responsibilities

In 2019 UNEP supported the Nature-Based Solutions workstream of the 2019 Climate Action Summit (CAS) convened by UN Secretary-General. Overall, 2019 was an exceptional year for nature-based solutions (NBS), resulting in an unprecedented emergence of the nature agenda. Through the CAS and other key events, nature has been placed clearly in the minds of decision-makers from far beyond the environment sector.

The NBS Manifesto, a plan for action to unlock the potential of NBS for climate action, was launched at the Summit, with the support of more than 70 governments, private sector, civil society and international organizations. In the follow-up to the Summit, there is strong commitment to build on the ambitious priorities of the NBS Manifesto and translate this into a concrete action agenda that can be delivered in 2020, in line with a series of key milestone events in the coming super year 2020. This includes taking forward the enhanced regional and international cooperation anticipated in the Manifesto.

UNEP is coordinating the CAS NBS follow up work on behalf of the UN-System. To support this work in 2020, the UN-REDD Programme Secretariat has the need for a consultant to support NBS External Engagement, based in the office in Geneva, Switzerland.
