Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Information Centre as part of the Department of Global Communications / Strategic Communications Division invites you to be part of an internship programme during the Spring/Summer of 2020.

The internship position is located in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Rio de Janeiro City. UNICs are the principal sources of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located, they are also responsible for promoting greater public understanding of and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating information on the work of the Organization to people everywhere, especially in developing countries. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of UNIC’s Director and/or the National Information Officer (NIO). He or she reports to the NIO of UNIC Rio de Janeiro.

The internship is UNPAID and full time. This internship is available for 4 months with the possibility of extension for a maximum of 6 months depending on the needs of the office and availability of the candidate. Interns work five days per week (35 hours).

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: Provide general office support; respond to complex information requests and inquiries of UNIC Rio; draft media and other communication documents; Assist with producing cards and design materials for exhibitions, folders, posters, invites, brochures, leaflets, etc; Assist with translations from/to English of text or/and video or/and graphics; Perform basic video and photo editing in Adobe Creative Suite (such as Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign); Work on event management and organization; Assist in organizing activities; Assist compiling of basic information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services about the UN; Assist with UNIC Rio photographic material; by producing digital imaging; write captions for UN photos, when required; Assist in the production and editing of UNIC Rio video/film projects; Assist in development and final production of social media products, as well as enrich potential online initiatives to audiences to raise awareness of the UN work; Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must: 1) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a Bachelor's (final year), Master's or PH.D. or equivalent in Journalism, Communication, Arts or Media Studies, Design or Graphic Design areas or 2) Be computer literate in standard software applications;- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants must be a student in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in Portuguese and knowledge of English are required for the internship.
