Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located in the UNEP, Economy Division, Chemicals and Health Branch in Geneva, Switzerland
CAVEAT: Working in the office is subject to availability of office space under any social distancing requirements as may be in force.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The Secretariat of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is the executing agency for the Global Environment Facility Project (GEF) 9771 on Global Best Practices on Emerging Policy Issues of Concern under SAICM. The project aims to accelerate and measure adoption of national activities to control emerging policy issues to achieve the 2020 implementation of SAICM goal and support early planning for chemical management in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Consultant to provide expertise to the secretariat of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).
The purpose of the consultancy is twofold: i) to support the SAICM secretariat with specialized tasks when convening meetings and building engagement in the SAICM process by taking into consideration different stakeholders and ii) contribute to the SAICM Knowledge Management work by supporting the development of knowledge and information instruments in connection with the SAICM GEF project 9771 on Global Best Practices on Emerging Policy Issues under SAICM.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: A university degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Business Administration or Political Science.
Experience: The consultant should have at least two years of experience in project planning and data management. The consultant should be familiar with SAICM objectives, structure, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The consultant should be familiar with office technology and knowledge management systems. Excellent organizational skills are required; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Language: Fluent written and spoken English is required.
Another UN language would be an asset.
