Cadre organisationnel

This profile is for the sole purpose of the UNOG Internship Program at the United Nations Arabic interpretation section at Geneva. There should be no expectation of employment within the UN after an internship. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above carrying international recruitment status in the Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of their internship.
The United Nations Office at Geneva is seeking expressions of interest from Arabic interpreters with English and/or French to undergo online internship training.
The internship is UNPAID. It will be free of charge and will be conducted online over 8 weeks under the guidance of UN staff interpreters. Places are limited.

Responsabilités

Within delegated authority, the intern will assist with the following duties:
- Is required to simultaneously interpret from a wide range of subjects;
- Carries out assignments as designated by trainers, including silent booth assignments and sight interpretation;
- Advances preparation for assignments using glossaries, UN reference documents and oral presentations to support oral skills;
- Participates in periodical evaluation sessions aimed at assessing his/her progress, addressing strengths and remedying shortcomings, as appropriate;
- Performs other related duties as required, including terminological work, and other tasks.

Timely attendance of training sessions is required.
A certificate of completion of internship will be provided at the end of the internship.

Formation

Applicants to the program must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a)Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in interpretation or equivalent in which at least one full academic year is devoted to interpretation.
b)Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) in interpretation or equivalent in which at least one full academic year is devoted to interpretation
Candidates should also have a substantive understanding of international and UN affairs.

Expérience professionnelle

Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, professional interpretation experience is an asset.

Applicants’ claim to interpretation experience must be supported by relevant proof attached to their application.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in Arabic as a main language is required. Fluency in English and/or French as a secondary language one of which must be a retour language.

After the initial screening process is completed, candidates will be required to undergo a pre-selection test to determine their eligibility.

A person who is the child or sibling of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations.
