Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The Geneva Environment Network (GEN) is a cooperative partnership of over 75 environment and sustainable development organizations and secretariats based in the International Environment House and elsewhere in the Geneva area, including United Nations offices and programmes, academic institutions, local authorities and non-governmental organizations.

Set up in 1999, the GEN secretariat, led by the UN Environment Programme and supported by Switzerland, actively promotes increased cooperation and networking between its members by: organizing and hosting meetings on the environment and sustainable development, such as GEN Roundtables and international workshops, promoting the dissemination of information and public awareness of environmental issues, providing conference services to the Environment House, and maintaining the Geneva Green Guide.

The service of a consultant is required to assist the GEN Programme Coordinator with the work of the Secretariat. The consultant will work part-time (60%) under the direct supervision of the GEN Coordinator and will be responsible for:

- carrying out research and data analysis on partners activities;
- carrying out technical research and data analysis on new thematic areas for capacity development;
- disseminating information on activities;
- assist in improving and implementing the network secretariat communication and visibility strategy;
- carrying out web-based updates; and
- assisting in overall secretariat activities as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Competency: Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, web applications etc.); Comfortable with the use of photo editing and graphic design software; Ability to work independently as well as in a team;
Ability to respond to tight deadlines in an organized and efficient manner.
Academic Qualifications: University degree in communications, journalism, environment, or sustainable development.
Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in content development, report writing in English; experience in implementing style guidelines, brand use guidelines and visuals; experience in web management platforms including Wordpress; experience in using social network; knowledge of Geneva Environmental community and global environmental agenda.
Language: Excellent proven writing and editing skills in English. Good knowledge of French. Any other UN official language an asset.
