Org. Setting and Reporting

Applications are sought for two internship positions within the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme of the Regional Office for Eastern Africa of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC ROEA). The internship programme offers a practical educational experience in the field of criminal justice and provides interns with the opportunity to work in a multicultural intergovernmental organization.

The Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme supports Member States to strengthen the rule of law through the prevention of crime and the promotion of effective, fair, humane and accountable criminal justice systems in line with the United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice and other relevant international instruments.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time (five days per week, 40 hours). The interns will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme UNODC ROEA. The duration of the internship is three months starting in September 2020 with the possibility of extension to a maximum of six months. Given the current situation due to COVID-19, selected interns may have to start working remotely or carry out the entire internship from their country of nationality/residence subject to travel restrictions in effect both in their home/residence country and the internship duty station as well as availability of affordable air or surface transportation as applicable.

Responsibilities

The interns shall undertake the following duties:

-Support the substantive work of the Programme on crime prevention and criminal justice.
-Conduct research on crime prevention and criminal justice issues.
-Participate in the planning of the Programme’s activities, such as on-line seminars, workshops, conferences and trainings, as well as draft reports and minutes.
-Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points and speeches.
-Support writing, reviewing and updating social media content to raise visibility of the Programme’s work.
-Support procurement activities (eg drafting of terms of reference).
-Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education

“To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

• Be computer literate in standard software applications;
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.”

Work Experience

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. Is your field of study closely related to the type of internship you are applying for?
Are you a student in a Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent or have already graduated from one of these programmes?
Will you be able to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation and other living expenses for the duration of the internship?

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language and/or Kiswahili is an asset.
