Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship position is for the UK and Ireland Desk at the United Nations Regional Information Center (UNRIC).

UNRIC represents the United Nations Department of Global Communication in Western Europe, supports the United Nations agencies in Brussels and cooperates with the European institutions. 

The Center is organised into nine geographic and thematic areas, covers 21 countries in Western Europe and works in 13 languages. The UK and Ireland Desk works together with the government, public institutions, private sector, non-governmental organizations, civil society and the media to raise awareness of the work of the United Nations in the UK and Ireland. 

The Center produces communication materials, supports partners, including other UN agencies, with communications campaigns and events and answers questions from the public on all matters related to the Organization and its campaigns.

The internship is for a four month period at the UNRIC office in Brussels. (The internship may take place remotely depending on the COVID-19 situation).

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Communications Officer for the UK and Ireland Desk.


Work closely with the UK and Ireland desk officer, UNRIC staff and external UNRIC partners.

Daily monitoring of the UK and Irish media for UN Headquarters.

Write articles in English for the UNRIC website.

Contribute to UK and Ireland social media channels.

Assist the UK and Ireland Desk in various tasks (events organization, communication campaigns, media monitoring etc.)

Assist the UK and Ireland Desk in organising Cine-ONU/UN Cinema events in Brussels and the UK and Ireland by researching suitable films, reviewing and making selections based on UN guidelines, producing promotional material, and contributing to the organisation and logistics of one of UNRIC’s most successful outreach initiatives.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above);

- Be computer literate in standard software applications;

- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is desirable.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
