Cadre organisationnel

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by UN Environment. This post is located in the Convention on Biological Diversity, Office of the Executive Secretary (OES), Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) Unit at the Montreal duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Head of the ABS Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Responsabilités

A) Contributes to the organization of CBD meetings related to access and benefit-sharing, such as meetings of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing and expert group meetings, including: a) carrying out administrative and logistical arrangements and servicing these meetings, as appropriate; b) undertaking research on issues of relevance to the work programme on Access and Benefit-sharing, as needed; c) contributing to the preparation of documentation for relevant CBD meetings on Access and Benefit-sharing. B) Contributes to the development and maintenance of the Access and Benefit-sharing web pages, including the following: a) maintaining the database on Access and Benefit-sharing measures up to date on the basis of contributions received and research to be carried out; b) maintaining the database on capacity-building projects related to Access and Benefit-sharing. C) Contributes as requested, to other work to be carried out in relation to the implementation of the work programme on Access and Benefit-sharing: a) responding to public requests for information and preparing relevant correspondence; contributing to activities under the Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) programme ofwork to increased global understanding of the issues related to Access and Benefit-sharing as appropriate. D) Performs any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Formation

Completion of secondary school is required. Supplementary training in administration, programme, project management or other related field is required.

Expérience professionnelle

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in the field of sustainable development or environment related programmes, environmental law, public administration and environmental conventions is required.
Experience working in an international organization or multicultural environment is desirable.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Good working knowledge of other UN languages is desirable.

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.

This position is temporarily available until 31 August 2021. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

• Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

• This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.

• Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply. Submitting an application or selection for the current temporary job opening does not delay or increase the mandatory age of separation.

• Retirees above the mandatory age of separation who wish to be considered for the current temporary job opening must indicate the reason for their last separation as "retirement." Such retirees shall not be employed by the Organization, unless (a) the operational requirements of the Organization cannot be met by staff members who are qualified and available to perform the required functions; and (b) the proposed employment would not adversely affect the career development or redeployment opportunities of other staff members and represents both a cost-effective and operationally sound solution to meet the needs of the service.
