UNEP FI now requires a Communications Consultant to develop and manage the messaging and narrative regarding the progress of the Principles Signatory Banks throughout the first year of its implementation, as well as the series of videos for the Anniversary of the Principles in September 2020. The content created for this milestone is meant to reflect the progress and changes achieved by some Signatory banks. In addition to that, the consultant will also contribute to the content creation (infographics, social media card…) by briefing the designer.

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a strategic public-private partnership between UNEP and the global financial sector. UNEP FI works with approximately 220 financial institutions, which are signatories to the UNEP FI Statements of Environmental Commitment, and a range of partners and organizations, to develop and promote linkages between the environment, sustainability and financial performance. Through its work-streams and regional activities, comprehensive work programme, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to identify, promote, and realize the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution strategies and operations. One of the UNEP FI initiative, The Principles for Responsible Banking require the expertise of a communications consultant.
The Principles for Responsible Banking, developed by a Core Group of 30 Founding Banks, were launched in September 2019 with 132 Founding Signatories. The aim was to transform the banking industry to enable it to play a leading role in achieving society’s goals as expressed in the Sustainable Development goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. The Principles now provide a framework for a sustainable banking system. It allows banks to set their own targets based on their individual circumstances and to credibly demonstrate their contribution to society’s common goals for sustainable development. There are currently around 180 Signatories to the PRB.
On occasion of the first anniversary of the launch of the Principles for Responsible Banking, UNEP FI is planning a communications campaign showcasing the progress that has been made over the first 12 months of implementation. For this campaign, UNEP FI requires the expertise of a communications consultant.
In the context of the One Year Anniversary of the Principles for Responsible Banking, the consultant will be required develop the overall communications strategy and plan for the One Year Anniversary of the Principles for Responsible Banking Initiative. The aim is to create and publish a series of videos reflecting the progress of the banks, individually but also collectively throughout this first as a PRB Signatory.
The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of Mr. Eric Usher, Head of UNEP FI and report directly to Ms. Simone Dettling, Programme Officer at UNEP FI. The consultant should take direction from Ms. Dettling while final deliverables shall also be approved by Mr. Usher.
The consultant will be required to:
• Discuss and agree overall goals of report, objectives, audiences
• Determine selection criteria for choosing banks (and messaging for those not chosen); what types of stories we are looking for
• Present overall strategy for review and feedback
• Draft overall key messages for the review
• Draft content for webpage
• Draft text for one overall infographic
• Work with and brief the UNEP FI designer Robert Wilson
• Review design concepts, infographic, social media cards
• Build webpage(s) with the selected content
• Regarding the video production: prepare interview questions and video narratives
• From material and stock footage, create eight to ten videos and one “hero” video of 3 to 4 minutes
Outputs:
• Questionnaire and covering email to the PRB Signatories
• Video briefing for selected banks and different stakeholders interviewed (eg. UNEP secretariat, Civil Society)
• A document with overall key messages for the review
• Content for webpage and downloadable “report”
• A text for one overall infographic
• A briefing document for the designer Robert Wilson
• Webpage(s) for the UNEP FI website to communicate on the created content
• An interview questions document for each interview to be conducted. It will be sent to both interviewees and interviewers, in particular the Regional Coordinators
• A technical support document for remote videoing, explaining the different steps to follow. It will be sent to interviewees and interviewers.
• Videos to be created: From material and stock footage, eight to ten videos and one “hero” video of 3 to 4 minutes
• Update and strategy documents to be presented during meetings with the operating team
Skills: Experience in corporate responsibility and sustainability communications, including direct participation in communications of annual and sustainability reports, and specific topics involving ESG and responsible finance. Extensive knowledge in similar initiatives of finance industry, such as the Principles for Responsible Investment or the Principles for Responsible Insurance. Track record of working with those initiatives is highly desired. Extensive experience interacting with and relating to finance professionals and international stakeholders at senior level. Team player with strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong internal relationships and networks. Motivated self-starter who enjoys working in a collaborative and international environment.
Academic Qualifications: Masters’ Degree in one or several of the following areas: communications, finance, business administration, environmental studies, management or sustainable development. Focus on communication of sustainability / environmental issues is an advantage.
Experience: At least 7 years of relevant experience, especially in communications in the financial services sector, or at NGOs, academic organizations, standard-setting bodies, public agencies focused on sustainability for the financial sector.
Language: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
