Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with the United Nations, Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.
The position is initially for a period of 12 months and located in the UNDRR Headquarters in Geneva. The main function is to provide substantive support for the preparations and organization of the 7th session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, which will take place in May 2022. The incumbent reports to the Senior Coordination Officer in charge of the Global Platform.
Within delegated authority, the Programme Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
Participates in the planning, preparation and organization of the 7th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, scheduled to take place in May 2022 in Indonesia.
Provides substantive support to the Global Platform preparatory process, including organization of consultations and meetings with Member States and stakeholders; drafting agendas, identifying participants, preparing substantive documents and presentations.
Coordinates the session management, including preparation of guidance notes, review of substantive documents and coordination and liaison with different stakeholders.
Contributes to ensuring the engagement of UN Member States and relevant external stakeholders as part of the preparatory process, and contributes to the supervision of the junior colleagues who are part of the team.
Develops, implements and evaluates assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
Coordinates policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies,
Generates survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identify problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
Organizes and prepares written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
Initiates and coordinates outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
Performs other duties as required.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in sustainable development, climate change, disaster risk reduction is desirable.
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.
Experience in coordination and facilitation roles within and between groups in collaborating with geographically dispersed teams is desirable.
Experience in disaster risk reduction is desirable.
A minimum of three years in disaster risk reduction is desirable.
International work experience in the United Nations system or similar organization is desirable.
Experience in planning and organizing an international conference is desirable.
English or French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required and another UN official language is an advantage.

This temporary position is for a period of 364 days. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him. In this context, all staff are expected to
