Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The interns will work on projects of the Cities Unit, Energy and Climate Branch, of the Paris-based Economy Division. The interns will be involved in the implementation of activities related to the work in Cities, and Circular Economy, Food, and Buildings. One intern will be assigned to each of the following workstreams: 1) the Circular Economy in Cities programme and the Global Initiative for Resource Efficient Cities (GI-REC); 2) the Food Waste and Sustainable Food Systems Programmes, and 3) the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) work respectively.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Kindly note that candidates will be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging any travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.

Under the overall supervision of the Head, Cities Unit and the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officers of the Cities Unit for each programme/initiative the intern will:

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Assist in the implementation of the Circular Economy in Cities programme and the Global Initiative for Resource Efficient Cities:
○ Assist weekly meeting with the Circular Economy Jobs Team and support in the development and implementation of pilot projects on circular economy jobs in cities with partners.
○ Support in the work on circular economy in cities monitoring frameworks. This includes, but is not limited to, searching for employment data at the city-level, proof-reading, reviewing and editing publications for monitoring purposes.
○ Attend and summarise weekly meeting with the Sustainable Cities Impact Programme (SCIP) and assist in the development of the 5-year Advocacy Plan.
○ Review and edit on-going works relating to the Neighbourhood Approach Programme for the Global Initiative for Resource Efficient Cities.
○ Assist in the administrative duties with new partnerships and legal duties linked to the contracting procedure.
○ Assist in the implementation and development of the Integrated Neighbourhood Guidelines website and online presentation of materials regarding new publications, new partners etc.

Assisting in the work of the Sustainable Food Systems Programme
○ Conducting research and supporting the analyses of sustainable food systems country policies
○ Supporting the development of the Food Waste Index, the UN mechanism to track country level progress on food waste prevention, in line with SDG 12.3
○ Working on web development and online presentation of materials for the SFS Programme and the Think Eat Save campaign website
○ Writing and drafting articles for the Think Eat Save website; helping with the promotion and awareness raising of the Think Eat Save campaign.
○ Supporting with the organization of workshops, webinars and other SFS meetings and/or events.

Assisting in the tasks of the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC)
○ Supporting technical workshop on regional roadmaps and GlobalABC COP26-related events and other GlobalABC events.
○ Assist with research as needed with regards to decarbonizing the built environment.
○ Support regarding member outreach including member databases
○ Support regarding outreach and preparation of webinars
○ Assist with communication efforts including support for presentations, articles, newsletter, website content development, and general awareness raising.

Supporting with the logistical preparation of webinars and events for the Cities Unit.
○ Support in the activities of the Cities Unit in (virtual) international conferences (e.g. Daring Cities 2020, etc.)
○ This includes preparing PowerPoint slides for webinars and conferences.
○ Support in drafting concept and briefing notes, etc.
○ Conduct city-profile research relating to their environmental, social and economic commitment to Sustainability.

Regularly updating the visual tools, infographics and reference materials.

Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings, including providing technical assistance during virtual meetings.

Assisting the Cities Unit team with the implementation of projects, preparing documents in English or other relevant language and liaising with contacts from Partner organisations or project countries.

Assist in other tasks associated with the implementation of the Cities Unit team’s projects, as needed and directed by supervising staff member.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study: Bachelors’ or Masters in the social sciences, preferably related to sustainable development issues or environmental studies.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable. Knowledge of Portuguese for the Food work is desirable
