Result of Service

Under the overall supervision of the Information Officer, Access Benefits Sharing (ABS) Unit, Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary, the consultant’s work and deliverables will primarily consist of reviewing and identifying pain points for users, designing UX/UI improvements and supporting their implementation, the development of UI guidelines, as well as, help and documentation for the CBD’s clearing-houses (the Biosafety Clearing-House of the Cartagena Protocol,, the Access and Benefit-sharing Clearing-House,, the Clearing-house for the Convention,,).

Duration: Initial contract will be for 2 months, with the expectation, upon satisfactory performance, of the contract being extended for an additional 8 months, if needed.

Organizational Unit

The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature in Rio in 1992. The Convention has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by United Nations Environment Programme. Its main tasks are to arrange for and service meetings of the Conference of the Parties, including preparation of pertinent documentation, operation of the central node of the clearing-house mechanism, liaison and coordination with other international bodies and processes and, in close collaboration with these partners, the provision of technical support for the effective implementation of the Convention.

The purpose of this position is to support the IT Unit, the Biosafety Unit and the Access Benefits Sharing (ABS) Unit in improving the user-interface (UI) and user-experience (UX) for the Biosafety Clearing-House (BCH) and the Access and Benefit-sharing Clearing-House (ABSCH), as well as the CBD’s Clearing-House (CHM) of the Convention.

Duties and responsibilities

The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Information Officer, ABS Unit, Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary and under the overall guidance of the Senior Programme Management Officer and Head of Biosafety Unit.

The consultant will perform the following specific tasks and activities:

• Conduct a review of the user interface and design of the clearing-house websites. Inspect the interface for usability issues and areas for improvement based on known UI/UX principles, best practices and heuristics that make it easy to use.
• Conduct user testing - Watch users as they attempt real tasks by paying attention to what user do and areas for improvement.
• Develop a UI Guidelines - Compile findings by developing standardized, actionable, and detailed solutions and packaging them as a guidebook for developers of common clearing-house UI/UX standards.
• Work closely with developers/programmers by providing mockups, guidance and testing in order to improve and adapt the UX/UI to ensure the improvements and solutions identified are implemented in a systematic manner.
• Identify help, documentation and user training needs and re-purposing and/or developing training and technical support material/documentation and updating delivery methods (FAQs, chatbot, step-by-step guides, website tours, e-learning), as appropriate.
• Any additional relevant tasks that may be required.

The consultant will be expected to liaise with relevant programme officers and team members to understand users' needs and identify corresponding user interface requirements, workflows, and functionalities and develop solutions in close collaboration with relevant SCBD Units.

Qualifications/special skills


Communication: Excellent spoken and written communication skills, including the ability to liaise with technical staff and present information in a clear and concise style.

Teamwork: Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Planning and Organizing: Excellent ability to plan projects and activities, work to tight deadlines, and manage conflicting priorities.

Client Orientation: Excellent ability to understand users' needs and to customize services and products accordingly, in order to provide user-friendly and ergonomic solutions that meet user requirements.

Academic Qualifications: BSc in Design, Communications, Information Science, Computer Science, Software Engineer or a related field is required. Further studies focusing on Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Cognitive Science, Graphic design, User-Interface Design, User-Experience Design is desirable.

Experience: A minimum of 5 years of work experience as a UX/UI designer for web applications or in a similar position is required.

It is desirable that the candidate’s experience include:

• Creating effective designs that balance technical, business, and user needs;
• Creating and refining user workflows, site architectures, and wireframes.
• Conducting qualitative research and data analysis and using systematic processes in order to identify user behavior patterns and inform business strategy and product design;
• Developing help and documentation, brand books, UI guidelines or UI kits for complex websites;
• Storytelling and utilizing visuals to explain complex concepts
• Applying learning theory, gamification, and educational interface design
• Developing of web applications, graphic design and technical implementation of user interfaces in a web-based environment
• Addressing cultural differences in design preferences

• Solid understanding of the concepts of user experience (UX), user interface design principles and conceptual design is required.
• Strong knowledge in HTML and CSS and front-end design frameworks (such as Bootstrap), and contemporary UI design patterns would be desirable.

Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other United
Nations languages is desirable.
