Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is located in the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch (SCSOB) in the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD) in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) at United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ) in New York.
The Department was established to monitor and assess global political developments with an eye to detecting potential crises and devising effective responses.
The Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD) oversees Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch (SCSOB).
The Office or Unit is DPRK Team.
The Intern reports to the SCAD 1718 Team Leader.
This internship is for an initial period of two months and may be extended up to six months depending on the needs of the Division.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Responsibilities

General support to the 1718 Committee
•Assist in revising the table of vessels designated by the 1718 Committee (i.e. in a downloadable format): critical tool for Member States and industry partners for monitoring sanctions compliance;
•Maintain and update as needed the consolidated table of humanitarian exemption requests Excel master table;
•Provide administrative and logistic support for the organization of meetings of the 1718 Sanctions Committee, including draft of the AR under the supervision of the PAO

Support to the Panel of Experts
•Support the work of the Panel in the area of maritime issues, in particular with focused research through maritime and other databases in English and other regional languages. Gather data on relevant maritime movements, conduct analysis and present findings in text and graphic form;
•Contribute to the gathering and analysis of data on sanctions evasion to be used for the final report of the Panel of Experts: support the preparation of annexes to the report with the relevant sections;
•At the request of the experts and with permission from the supervising Political Affairs Officer, assist with special projects, such as ad hoc reports to the 1718 Committee or presentations for speaking engagements.

Thematic research and monitoring on sanctions implementation
•Monitor Member State implementation of sanctions and issues related to the mandate of the 1718 Committee and provide summary reports
•Conduct research on cross-cutting thematic issues relevant for the mandate of the 1718 Sanctions Committee: review of academic literature; participation in events organized by the UN, Member States, think tanks;
•Assist the Political Affairs Officer in the monitoring on geopolitical developments in the DPRK and in the region

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following
conditions must be met:

1.Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree
or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree
programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent)

2.The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for.

3. Proficient in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word,
Excel and PowerPoint or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment,
scanner, printer, etc.).

4.Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal
commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.

5.Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural
backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of
differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Chinese required.
