By developing a common understanding of what constitutes positive impact finance and working with members, their clients and with public partiers on the development of new business and financing models the workstream is a central contribution to the mobilisation of mainstream finance for sustainability goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a strategic partnership between UNEP and the global financial sector. UNEP FI works with approximately 300 financial institutions and a range of partners and organisations, to understand the linkages between sustainability issues and finance and to promote sustainable finance internationally.

Started in 2017, the UNEP FI Positive Impact Initiative is a think-and-do-tank within UNEP FI exclusively focused on closing the $2.5 trillion SDG financing gap. Based on a unique theory of impact, PII works with finance sector representatives and other stakeholder groups to mainstream impact analysis and management in business and finance as a cornerstone to financing the SDGs.

UNEP FI needs a Content Manager to support to its Positive Impact Initiative.

The final result of the consultant’s work will be the successful development and launch of the next batch of UNEP FI Tools for Holistic Impact Analysis.

The tasks and responsibilities of the consultant will be to:

(i) Help support and participate in the UNEP FI Working Groups set up for the implementation and development of the PII’s Holistic Impact Analysis methodology and tools; meeting preparations and discussions, addressing Working Group member inquiries.

(ii) Assist with mocking-up the new version (V2) of the Portfolio Impact Analysis Tools and the Real Estate Impact Analysis Tool and code the functionalities of all three tools once the mock-ups are completed.

(iii) Work with UNEP FI’s partners and counterparties to create interoperability mechanisms within the tool, in particular as regards the use of different industry codes, and the creation of a library of performance indicators and metrics.

(iv) Support the testing period of the new tools, implement any adjustments/corrections accordingly and consolidate the technical specifications of the tool.

(v) Assist with the development of the next generation of the Corporate Impact Analysis Tool, to be usable jointly by financial institutions and their clients.

vi) Assist with updates to the impact mappings of the different Tools.

viii) Support the PII Programme Lead with related tasks as appropriate and participate in UNEP FI Team meetings and activities.

The Consultant will be reporting to the Head of UNEP FI Eric Usher, and the UNEP FI Positive Impact Programme Lead, Careen Abb.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Familiarity and solid understanding of the sustainable business and sustainable finance agenda, including the main standards, norms, frameworks and players that currently define this field. Familiarity with the main approaches to impact measurement and management. Excellent analytical skills and capacity to understand complex / multi-facetted issues. Quick learner and motivated self-starter who enjoys working in a highly collaborative and international environment. Good interpersonal skills. IT – Advanced skills in Excel required.

Academic Qualifications: Masters’ Degree involving a combination of the following areas: finance, business administration, environmental / sustainable development studies, economics, international relations.

Experience: At least 2 years of relevant experience involving private sector networks, international relations and sustainability issues, preferably involving technical and analytical responsibilities.

Language: English is a working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
