Result of Service

In close collaboration with EMG staff and member agencies, the Communications Consultant will develop a communication strategy and implement communication activities to achieve better publicity of EMG activities as per the EMG workplan. He/she will produce communication material that target a diverse audience (international institutions, governments, local authorities, general public, donors, EMG Members, Member States).

The Consultant will be expected to deliver agreed-upon outputs and services within a period of 6 months starting February 2021 during which the consultant will work for 60 days.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Environment Management Group (EMG) is a United Nations (UN) system-wide coordination body on environment and human settlements established in 2001 pursuant to the General Assembly resolution 53/242. The Group is supported by a secretariat provided by UN Environment Programme, located in Geneva, Switzerland. The EMG membership consists of the specialized agencies, programmes and organs of the United Nations including the secretariats of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements. The EMG identifies issues on the international environmental agenda that warrant cooperation and finds ways of engaging its collective capacity in coherent management responses to those issues. In accordance with its Terms of Reference the EMG works through Issue Management Groups, Consultative Processes and Task Teams.

The EMG is hiring a consultant to support its communication and outreach activities, including web-based communication, to ensure a good understanding and recognition of EMG’s services and value to its stakeholders.

In line with the EMG 2021 workplan and under the supervision of the Head of Office at the EMG Secretariat, the consultant will carry out the following project tasks for the EMG Communications Programme.
• Develop and implement global communications strategy that has clear objectives, messaging and transmission channels for each target audience.
• Maintain a strong EMG brand, including through the EMG website, videos, social media and EMG publications.
• Assist the development of project and topic-related communication strategies and strengthen existing communications products, with a specific focus on messaging for key stakeholder groups (EMG Membership; the environmental community; national and local governments; media and influencers; general public; donors; etc.).
• Develop and coordinate corporate communications material and content for the EMG website and social media to build internal and external visibility and increase interest among key stakeholder groups.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: An advanced university degree in the area of communications, journalism, or public relations.

Experience: At least five years working experience in the field of communications or journalism. Up-to-date proficiency with communication tools and related best practice, including social media. Experience in implementing communication strategies. Creative and resourceful strategist with a track record of proactivity. Knowledge of international relations and environmental sciences is desirable.

Language: For the advertised post, fluency in oral and written English is an absolute requirement. Knowledge of other UN languages would be an additional advantage.

Skills: Proven exceptional writing and editing skills; strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed environment; ability to cope with a heavy work load, and multiple and diverse projects in an organized and timely manner; attention to detail. The incumbent is expected to work independently, be self-directed and highly motivated.
