• Draft speaking notes, briefs, and other deliverables related to the three methane workstreams
• Develop presentations to convey project goals and objectives to various stakeholder audiences
• Assist the organization of high-level meetings and workshops, including drafting invitation letters, coordinating with stakeholders, and compiling summary reports
• Attend and support various meetings with stakeholders, including taking detailed notes and compiling meeting summaries

UN Environment Programme implements the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s Mineral Methane Initiative, which aims to reduce global methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by 45% by 2025, and 60-75% by 2030. To achieve these goals, UNEP leads three global methane workstreams:
1) The Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP)
The OGMP is a multi-stakeholder partnership bringing together governments, international organizations, non-government organizations and the oil and gas industry. It was launched at the UN SG Climate Summit in 2014 as a voluntary initiative to help companies reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. In support of the Mineral Methane Initiative targets and acknowledging that methane emissions reduction is a critical step in meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement, OGMP partners have strengthened the initiative’s reporting framework to turn it into a highly credible gold standard for reporting able to promote companies’ actions and provide stakeholders confidence in reported emissions levels.
2) The Methane Science Studies (MSS)
The objective of the Methane Science Studies is to improve the understanding of methane emissions from the oil and gas industry through a series of peer-reviewed scientific studies to measure methane emissions across the oil and gas supply chain. This public data will allow industry, governments, and other stakeholders to prioritize actions to reduce emissions of this important short-lived climate pollutant. Measurement studies are in in various stages of planning and exploration around the world across different segments of the oil and gas value chain. The studies are performed by leading academic institutions.
3) The Global Methane Alliance (GMA)
The Global Methane Alliance was developed in the context of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s Mineral Methane Initiative. It supports countries to include methane reduction targets from the oil and gas sector in their second Nationally Determined Contributions that will be presented at COP 26:
• 45% reduction by 2025 and 60% to 75% by 2030;
• or a “near zero” methane intensity target.
Under the framework of the Global Methane Alliance, UNEP organizes awareness raising and capacity building workshops for governments around the world, and collaborates with partner organizations to identify and implement support opportunities.
The consultant will provide support to the coordination of the three components of the Mineral Methane Initiative.
Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental or energy studies and/or policy, or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience: • At least two years of experience in the energy sector (may include relevant educational and internship experience)
• Basic familiarity with the oil and gas sector, particularly related to major emissions sources
• Experience leading research projects and compiling and presenting results in a clear, action-oriented manner
• Excellent written and oral communications skills; strong presentation skills preferred
Language: For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English.
