The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) is a multi-year interagency programme, implemented jointly by UNEP, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
A consultant is sought to support the planning and organization of the 4th PAGE Ministerial Conference (dates to be confirmed). All events will take place at the designated venue in the UAE and/or virtually.
This work will contribute to the realisation of the following outcome of the PAGE EC Project: PAGE Outcome 4 implemented by UNEP directly at global level: National and regional stakeholders, including green economy champions, decision makers, practitioners, and youth representatives have access to cutting-edge knowledge for advancing IGE approaches and global best practices, analytical tools and platforms and events for sharing their insights and innovations with peer groups within and across countries and communities.
The Resources and Markets Branch of the Economy Division doesn’t currently hold this expertise in house.
Specific tasks and responsibilities
The objective of the consultancy is to assist PAGE in the planning and organization of the 4th PAGE Ministerial Conference 2021, under the direct of Mr. Steven Stone, Chief, Resources and Markets Branch, Economy Division, including:
• Manage the overall organization of the 4th PAGE Ministerial Conference 2021 to be hosted by UNEP and UAE;
• Liaise with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment staff, under the guidance of UNEP, coordinating the planning of the 4th PAGE Ministerial Conference 2021;
• Develop the strategy, structure and agenda for the 4th PAGE Ministerial Conference 2021, in consultation with the PAGE Steering Committee and partner organizations;
• Liaise with the PAGE communications officer and the Resources and Markets Branch communications officer and subsequently with the PAGE partner organizations in the development of an outreach and communications strategy;
• Coordinate all logistics for the 4th PAGE Ministerial Conference 2021, including identifying potential speakers and participants, and coordinating with the online conference service provider;
• Report on progress both informally and formally to UNEP senior managers.
• Draft and finalize final reports from the 4th PAGE Ministerial Conference 2021; and
• Assisting in other tasks related to the 4th PAGE Ministerial Conference 2021, as necessary.
Skills: Flexible team player and proven coordination skills, with ability to work under pressure and handle multiple activities concurrently. Proven superior writing and editing abilities. Demonstrated experience organizing international conferences and meetings.
Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent degree in relevant subject e.g. environmental studies, economics, international relations, public policy).
Experience: Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in organizing major international conferences and managing multi-stakeholder research projects either in the public or private sector; preferably related to economics, green growth, or sustainable development.
Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language (French or Arabic) is an advantage.
