Org. Setting and Reporting

The Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) was established in 2007 to strengthen the links and coordinate the Department's activities in the areas of police, justice and corrections, mine action, the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of ex- combatants and security sector reform. (

The Communications and Graphic Design internship in the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions is for a minimum period of three months up to six months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Interns may be assigned to work with specific OROLSI components, including the Justice and Corrections Service, under the direct supervision of the component.


Within delegated authority, the Intern will have the following duties and functions:

-Assists the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) with strategic communication and public outreach related to rule of law/security institutions/justice and corrections in peacekeeping and conflict-affected settings;
-Serves as focal point for administrative coordination of communications projects and implementation, involving extensive liaison with diverse organizational units including in requesting, compiling, summarizing, and presenting basic information/data on specific justice and corrections programmes/projects and related topics or issues.
-Assists with the development, update and implementation of justice and corrections communication strategies, plans and guidance as well as coordination of project planning and implementation of other initiatives;
-Assists with the development and design communications and multimedia products for web and social networking platforms;
-Assists in developing content of OROLSI or assigned component stories and information to increase awareness and understanding of OROLSI issues;
-Assists in the preparation of periodic reports, briefing notes, meeting notes graphic and statistical summaries.
-Assist with drafting and editing of OROLSI or assigned component publications (e.g. fact sheets, brochures, newsletters and donor-related updates) for internal and external purposes;
-Conceptualizes and creates data visualizations and interactive content utilizing design and
other software;
-Assist with the preparation of promotional videos, motion graphics and photography.
-Researches, compiles, and drafts information for use in the preparation and production of social media content;
-Monitors and analyzes statistics related to social media content and web analytics-based platforms (i.e. Talkwalker, Twitter Analytics, Facebook Insights).
-Performs any other duties as requested by the supervisor.



-Knowledge and understanding of international relations, political affairs and United Nations peacekeeping; understanding of areas related to the rule of law and security institutions.
-Knowledge of, and ability to develop, draft and design communications, outreach and multimedia products.
-Knowledge of visual communication and graphic design, and ability to develop creative solutions and produce high quality graphic material;
-Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat;
-Experience in using web-based resources, including social media, web editors, CMS. Knowledge of HTML a plus.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

-Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a)be enrolled in a graduate school programme in public relations, communications or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b)be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme public relations, communications or related field (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
(c)have graduated with a university degree in a public relations, communications or related field (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

-Excellent writing/blogging skills.
-Passionate about Social Media, Blogging, and the Events.
-Strong computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel.
-Strong research skills.
-Attention to details.
-Strong hands on approach, analytical and problem-solving skills.
-Well-organised, practical-minded and able to prioritize a busy and varied work-load.
-Independent, self-starter personality.
-Familiarity with rule of law and human rights principles and frameworks would be a distinct asset.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.


English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.
